Advising

Students are strongly encouraged to consult with their advisor throughout their academic career. Advisor assignments are given to new students with their assessment results. Advisors play a valuable role in helping students meet their educational and career goals. All new students must have the signature of an advisor before registering. Continuing students should meet with an advisor before registering to better understand the Miami Plan, divisional requirements, and appropriate course selection. A list of faculty advisors for the various majors is available from the Student Services staff in Johnston Hall Room 1. There are special advisors for pre-major, undeclared students and transfer students. Also, students who need to petition for grade changes should come to this office.

Career and Internship Services

This office assists students with internships, co-ops, full-time and on-campus jobs. Available jobs are posted on web pages, job boards,on list serves, and in the career library. Students can register on-line to be in a searchable database accessed by employers. Students are assisted with career options, resume writing, interviewing, job search techniques and strategies, and making employer contacts.

This office assists students in developing, evaluating, initiating, and implementing career plans. Use of the Career Library and Internet resources is encouraged. Students should complete the Internet assignments on the detailed brochure before making an appointment.

Early Childhood Learning Center

The Early Childhood Learning Center is operated by the Middletown Area Family YMCA and is available for children 3 to 6 years of age. The program is licensed by the state of Ohio and is open year round from 6:30 am - 6 pm. The Early Childhood Learning Center is open to all Mum faculty, staff, students and Middletown area community members. Community Services (Partnerships with Local Agencies)

Partnerships with local agencies collaborations exist between the campus and many local and regional agencies. Faculty, staff and students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of community outreach projects. Partnerships currently exist with the local school system along with several United Way agencies. A complete listing of partnerships is available in the Office of Student Affairs.

Counseling Services

Students seeking counseling can learn about a number of personal and relationship issues: self-esteem, anger or stress management, single parenting, career decision-making, effective communication, Internet addiction, loneliness, depression, eating disorders, trauma, and wellness. Counseling is a safe place and is confidential. Although walk-ins are welcome, appointments are encouraged. Community agency referral is provided when necessary. Outreach programs are available on request.

Disability Services

Disability Services provides accommodations for students with disabilities; psychological, physical, and learning. Students with documented disabilities will be provided with services ranging from note-taking and furniture, to technology or special arrangements in order to access the educational process. Students are encouraged to make appointments early for priority scheduling, ordering books on tape, or meeting other needs.

Miami University provides comprehensive, affordable student health plan designed to meet Miami University Middletown students' needs. Students may view both the basic and comprehensive plan highlights, annual rates, complete claim forms and enroll directly on line at www.maksin.com (Policy # SSH9032868) . Learning Assistance

Peer tutoring is free to all students and is available in most subject areas. Students who are experiencing difficulty in a course but aren't sure what they really need to do are encouraged to come to Learning Assistance. They will be guided to the appropriate person (faculty, specialist, or tutor) as well as to any needed support courses and resource materials.

Math Lab

Many students struggle with math courses. Math tutors are available during the day and evening to assist with homework and to answer questions. If additional help is needed, individual tutoring can be arranged with a peer tutor or the Math Specialist. The Math Lab is located in Room 8 Johnston Hall.

Reading/Writing Lab

Students who are overwhelmed by the volume of reading required in college can increase their comprehension and reading speed by working with the Reading Specialist. Self-study programs using computer software can also be utilized. Students who have difficulty in organizing and expressing their thoughts in compositions can work with either the Writing Specialist or one of the Writing Consultants who work in the lab. Word processing programs are also available on the computers for use in completing writing assignments. The Reading/Writing Lab is located in 2 Johnston Hall.

Student Success Program

The Student Success Program is designed to help first-year students in their transition to college life. Faculty and staff will provide courses and out-of-classroom experiences for students. Students will be encouraged to also participate in workshops and seminars. The coordinator of the Student Success Program will collaborate with members of the university community in making this initiative student-oriented. The Student Success office is open 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Wellness

The wellness kiosk which is located in the Johnston Hall lobby across from the Information Desk. Programs range from information about diet and excercise, to workshops on stress management and alcohol use. There are also seminars throughout the year on topics such as date rape, AIDS, and STD's.
