The ThunderHawks cap off an impressive 2014-2015 season as they capture back to back ORC State Championship titles and their 6th out of the last 7 years. The road to this Championship was not an easy one as the ThunderHawks path was littered with very emotional games, starting with rival Miami University Hamilton. With that being the third time the ThunderHawks would face MU Hamilton, both teams knew what each other was about, with The ThunderHawks just out muscling MU Hamilton for the 90-64 led by Demarcus Smith with a game high 32 points and 16 rebounds.
The next milestone came in the Final Four as the ThunderHawks looked to avenge a regular season loss at the hands of tournament host, Ohio University Lancaster. The gym was to capacity as this heated game went back and forth with 7 ties and 12 lead changes in the contest. The ThunderHawks learned from their earlier loss and minimized OU Lancaster game breaking shots. With the game tied 73-73 and 9 seconds to go in regulation, the ThunderHawks were not able to get the best look at a shot as Tre'Von Teague scooped up a loose ball and shot with a hand in his face, just to have it skim off the rim and fall into the sure hands of Josh Holfinger who missed the put-back as regulation expired! With the miss, the ThunderHawks had the look of determination to not let their title run end. After some water and game plan from the coaching staff, the ThunderHawks joined hands in a pile with an exuberant "1-2-3 WIN"! Overtime proved to be too much for OU Lancaster as the ThunderHawks score 19 points in the 5 minute overtime period to come out victorious 92-84 led by Josh Holfinger 17 points and 14 rebounds, Tre'Von Teague had a solid 26 point effort.
Championship Sunday! The ThunderHawks know at this point they are meant to be in this title game versus Ohio State University Newark. If it seems like deja vu, it was, as these two teams met in the Championship game of the 2013-2014 ORC State Tournament. As the 2013-2014 Title game played out, so did this year's game! The ThunderHawks found themselves down by as much as 10 in the first 5 minutes of the contest. With a 30 second timeout called by Coach Nocton, the ThunderHawks took a deep breath, took in a little water, and came out with the focus of a high-powered telescope as they went on a 13-2 run out of that timeout and went into halftime with a slight 47-43 advantage. The ThunderHawks lost to OSU Newark on a late tip-in earlier in the season, so right out of the gate in the second half, the ThunderHawks knew they could not put themselves in potentially the same situation to let a tip-in beat them and take away a back-to-back Championship, so they didn't. There were many runs by both teams, but the ThunderHawks were able to stifle those runs with key rebounds and scores off OSU Newark turnovers as the final buzzer sounded 98-83 led by Tre'Von Teague with 23 points and 7 rebounds, Demarcus Smith and Josh Holfinger both with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Cooper Nolte also has 16 points and Kyle Remley added 15 points.
Both Tre'Von Teague and Josh Holfinger were named to the 2014-2015 ORC All-Tournament Team with Holfinger bringing home the Tournament MVP.
The ThunderHawk coaching staff thanks the players, families and fans for all the support this year as they look to reload for a 2015-2016 Title run!
