Leadership And Service 2009 Strategic Vision for Miami University Middletown
I. Vision:
By the year 2009, Miami University Middletown will be a leader among Ohio's
university regional campuses in offering learner-centered, technology-supported
educational programs and services to meet the evolving needs of diverse constituencies.
II. Campus Goals
To be a leader among Ohio's regional campuses, Miami University Middletown
must be a vibrant, energetic, forward-looking institution that works effectively
with the Oxford and Hamilton campuses and other education partners, seeks continuously
to enhance its academic and intellectual vitality, provides ready public access
to its programs, and controls costs. The access and outreach nature of the campus
mission emphasizes affordable pre-baccalaureate and technical programs, selected
baccalaureate and Master's degrees, and continuing education programs. Leadership
will be demonstrated by meeting the following goals:
- Improving the recruitment and retention of students in degree and non-degree
educational programs.
- Recruiting and supporting high quality faculty and staff who contribute
actively to the success of the campus mission through teaching, service, and
scholarship.
- To broaden undergraduate, technical, and non-credit curricula to meet diverse
student needs and to prepare students to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
- To encourage teaching and learning in a variety of contexts by strengthening
the intellectual and cultural life of the campus, academic support services,
and instructional technoloygy.
- Increasing the diversity of the faculty, staff and student body while strengthening
support for an environment within which a diverse community flourishes.
- Enhancing campus facilities, buildings, systems and technologies.
- Strengthening the campus revenue base.
- Strengthening the relationships with and services provided to local communities.
- Developing and implementing processes for continuing campus improvement.
III. Area Goals
To be meaningful, campus goals must be refined by processes for continuing
quality improvement using comparison data and specific outcomes. This refinement
and definition will require the broad involvement of the campus community. Therefore,
the campus directors and senior administrators, department Chairs and academic
coordinators, with appropriate consultation, are being asked to set area goals
to assist the campus in strategic planning over the next 12 months. To assure
consistency and compatibility with overall campus and university objectives,
all area plans will be reviewed and coordinated by the Office of the Executive
Director.
IV. Guiding Principles
In formulating plans, the campus will be guided by two principles:
Build on the campus' core strengths that contribute to its mission.
Core strengths include:
- high expectations for faculty and staff excellence in instruction and service
- a liberal arts underpinning across the curriculum
- technical programs that meet regional needs of business and industry
- extracurricular and co-curricular opportunities that emphasize ethical values, leadership, and public service
- student-friendly access through open-enrollment admissions and a diverse and welcoming campus environment
- a diverse campus community reflecting the region's demographics
|
Strengthen the academic and service climate of the institution.
Strengthening involves developing and supporting:
- scholarship and creative work
- campus involvement in service to regional communities
- high academic standards and expectations
- pedagogies that recognize and support the diverse learning styles of adult students
- programs for student success
- a culturally rich environment

V. Measurable Outcomes
Campus performance will be examined using a combination of measures. Progress
toward meeting plan objectives will be evaluated each year by a continuing improvement
process that provides comparative information. Since quality cannot always be
determined by numbers alone, quantitative indices will be augmented by considered
judgments. The results of these evaluations and the progress toward meeting
goals will be reported annually to the Provost and the Middletown campus community.
