II. Miami University Middletown Consulting and Deliberating Bodies

  1. Miami University Middletown Senate Membership
  2. (Adopted, February 28, 1996, Miami University Middletown Senate; revised October 6, 1997)

    All those who hold academic or positional rank of instructor and above, with a teaching responsibility, or the equivalent, of at least half-time per semester on the Middletown Campus; the Dean of the Campus, all those who are full-time, continuing, unclassified professional staff members who have a position with a permanent budget line; four Middletown Campus students, namely the executive committee of the Student Advisory Council, and all benefit eligible classified employees having regularly budgeted positions will constitute the membership of the Middletown Campus Senate. In addition, the President and the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs will be ex officio members.

    Authority

    The authority of the Miami University Middletown Senate is derived from, and subject to, the authority of the Miami University Senate Faculty Assembly.

    The Miami University Middletown Senate may act on matters which are essentially local in character and effect: such as, but not limited to, educational programs; requirements and standards; faculty welfare; and student conduct.

    Matters which are not local in character and effect may be discussed and referred to University Senate for further consideration if deemed necessary by a majority of the Miami University Middletown.

    Presiding Officer

    The presiding officer of the Miami University Middletown Senate will be the Dean of Miami University Middletown, or a designee.

    The Assistant to the Dean, or a designee, will serve as secretary to the Miami University Middletown Senate. A Parliamentarian will be appointed by the Dean before the opening meeting of each academic year.

    Meetings

    The Miami University Middletown Senate shall be scheduled to meet at least twice each semester of the academic year.

    The calendar of meetings will be published and distributed to the members of the Senate by the end of the second week of the first semester. Special meetings may be called by the Dean of the Campus or by petition of at least 10 Senate members.

  3. Miami University Middletown Operating Rules
    1. Parliamentary Authority. The parliamentary authority shall be the latest edition of Robert's Rules of Order, Revised in all cases where it is not inconsistent with the Special Rules of this Senate.

    2. Quorum. A quorum for the Miami University Middletown Senate Shall be the number of members present at any regularly scheduled and announced meeting. The quorum at special meetings shall be 50% of the membership of the Miami University Middletown Senate.

    3. Amendments. These rules may be amended by an affirmative vote of a simple majority of those voting at any regular meeting where such amendment was included as part of the agenda for such meeting. If an amendment is presented from the floor without prior notice it will require an affirmative two-thirds majority of those voting.

  4. Miami University Middletown Committee Guidelines
    1. Prior to every Faculty Advisory Council meeting Miami University Middletown Committee Chairs are to submit, to the Office of the Dean, a brief description (2-3 sentences) of issues addressed by their committee. Faculty Advisory Council will refer issues of critical interest to the Miami University Middletown Senate.

    2. A brief written report of committee action shall be submitted by the Committee Chair to the Office of the Dean ten (10) days prior to scheduled Miami University Middletown Senate meetings. Actions requiring Senate approval can be submitted as a motion during verbal report or under new or old Senate business.

    3. Committee membership is not mandatory but should be an effective, substantive commitment on the part of members. For committees to be effective, membership should be more substantive on the part of members.

    The following guidelines were established by the Committee on Committees and Elections (October, 1994): faculty members are NOT required to serve on campus committees (they may choose to focus on other areas); faculty and staff should not sign up for committees unless they are willing to make a firm commitment; chairs will evaluate at the end of the calendar year, each member's contributions; each member will likewise evaluate the chair's performance; at the beginning of each calendar year, in conjunction with the charge to the committee from the Dean, each committee shall set specific goals; at the end of the calendar year, the chair will write a report detailing the committee's work that year and including priorities and recommendations for future work.

  5. Miami University Middletown Committees

    1. Advising, Admission, Retention, and Learning Assistance Committee (AARLA)
    2. Mission: To serve in an advisory capacity to the Admission, Registration, Records and Advising and Learning Assistance offices by discussing, researching, and making recommendations regarding current issues concerning these specific areas.

    3. Artist and Lecture Series Committee
    4. Mission: To serve in an advisory capacity to the Artist and Lecture Series Coordinator in developing a diversity of cultural performances and education programs to enrich and broaden the experiences of Miami University Middletown students and members of the community.

      To include 50% student membership (Adopted by Middletown Campus Senate, October 27, 1994)

    5. Campus Affairs Committee
    6. (Adopted by Middletown Campus Senate, September 30, 1996)

      Mission: To encourage an intellectual, open, just, reasonable, and lively campus community.

      The Campus Affairs Committee will promote dialogue on intellectual and social issues among students/faculty/staff.

    7. Committee on Committees and Elections
    8. Mission: To accomplish the following five (5) functions:

      1. To formulate committee membership policies and procedures for the Miami University Middletown Senate Standing Committees.
      2. To inform faculty of opportunities for all-university committee service.
      3. To conduct elections for Faculty Advisory Council and University Senate.
      4. To assist the Dean in recommending members for ad hoc committees.
      5. To establish membership for the Miami University Middletown Senate Standing Committees.

    9. Communications Board
    10. Mission: To oversee the operations of the student newspaper and the student radio station including procedures, policies, and student personnel appointments.

    11. Instructional Improvement Committee
    12. (Adopted, April 12, 2001, Middletown Campus Senate)

      Mission: To encourage and assist faculty development in instructional improvement by

      • Sponsoring events on issues of interest in instructional improvement and teaching effectiveness, such as workshops, colloquia, student-faculty dinners, and other programs that include faculty and students;
      • Evaluating proposals and applications for awards and grants available for the improvement of instruction and for faculty development;
      • Advising the Associate Dean in support of faculty development by recommending subjects of interest, issues of importance, opportunities for instructional improvement, and support materials related to instructional improvement.

    13. Research and Grants Committee
    14. Mission: To stimulate sponsored research and other creative activity by Miami University Middletown faculty, staff, and students in order to promote this important element of university endeavor while contributing in a substantial way to the University's and Campus' overall academic programs.

    15. Scholarship and Awards Committee
    16. Mission: To serve in an advisory capacity to the Office of the Dean on general matters of scholarship and awards for Miami University Middletown students and;

      to promote coordination and cooperation with the Office of Student Financial Aid at Miami University Middletown and the Offices of Scholarship and Development in Oxford; and to select recipients.

    17. Teaching Learning Technology Roundtable (TLTR)
    18. Mission:

      • Consider and promote increased usage of computing across the disciplines, including interactive multimedia technologies
      • Continue to identify faculty and staff computer and multimedia training needs and develop appropriate workshops, seminars, etc., utilizing Campus/University faculty and staff to conduct such programs
      • Develop a campus instructional and information technology plan including consideration for multimedia technologies, facilities and support, which will help the campus realize its vision and goals stated in Leadership and Service 2009.

      Representation of every unit be discontinued on the Computer Committee. (Adopted by Middletown Campus Senate, October 27, 1994)

  7. Miami University Middletown Consultative Bodies
    1. Academic Council
    2. (Revised January 13, 2003)

      This Council is advisory to the Dean concerning academic matters. This group is concerned with scheduling of classes, faculty supervision and evaluation procedures and policies, advising within their divisions, and other academic matters. Membership consists of all chairs and academic coordinators, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, and the Director of Records and Registration. Meetings will be scheduled at least once a month during the academic year.

       

    3. Faculty Advisory Council

      This Council shall enhance communications between and among the Campus administration and the faculty. Council members shall help to identify and seek resolution for matters of concern to the faculty. Members of the council shall help shape future plans and directions for the Campus.

      The Council shall meet at least two times per semester. It shall meet one-two weeks before each Middletown Campus Senate meeting. Items for the Senate agenda shall be discussed at this meeting.

      The Dean of the Middletown Campus shall chair the Council.

      Appointments to the Council shall be made before the fourth week of the fall semester, and the term of office shall begin at that time.

      Six members are selected from and by the following coordinatorship groupings:

        2. Humanities and Fine Arts

        1. Mathematics and Science

      The Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, the Parliamentarian of the Middletown Campus Senate, and our two elected representatives to the Miami University Senate (Oxford) shall serve as ex officio members of the Council.

    5. Miami Middletown Student Government (MMSG)
    6. The Miami Middletown Student Government is the recognized forum for student opinion concerning matters of general policy and procedure which affect the students. It expresses its opinions and makes recommendations for legislative or administrative action through the Director of Student Affairs (serving as advisor) to the Dean of the Middletown Campus. The Council is made up of one appointed member from each of the currently active student organizations. In addition, six at large members, three each from the freshmen and sophomore classes and two at large upper class students are elected by the general student body in the fall of each academic year.

    7. Classified Advisory Committee
    8. This Committee is for the purpose of discussing issues, concerns and problems relevant to the Middletown Campus classified employees. The Committee is made up of six members of the classified staff and the Middletown Campus representative of the Miami University Classified Advisory Committee.

    9. Citizens Advisory Council
    10. The council is composed of 15 members from the Miami University Middletown area who serve as a channel for community interaction with the Campus. The President, and the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs of Miami University and the Dean of Miami University Middletown are ex officio members. The principal concerns of the council are to represent the community expectations for the Campus to the faculty and administration, to provide the Campus with a direct means of communication to the community served, and to advise on community relations. The Dean, in consultation with the council chair, develops the agenda and convenes meetings of this council. Meetings are scheduled as deemed necessary by the Dean.

    11. Associate Degree Advisory Councils
    12. Associate Degree Advisory councils serve to develop suggestions and guidelines for the associate degree programs at Miami University Middletown and to act as liaisons between the University and the community.

      Associate Degree Advisory councils: Business Technology; Engineering Technology; Computer and Information Technology; and Nursing.
