Adding, Dropping, Withdrawing, and Repeating Courses

If you want to do so, you can add students to a section of your classes at almost any time by having them fill out the appropriate form (available at Records and Registration) and getting your signature. Here are some other policies to be aware of with respect to adding and dropping students from classes:

First week of classes: Students may register for courses via BannerWeb through the first five days of the semester with no interaction with the instructor.

15th day of semester: Please monitor attendance during the first two weeks of the semester and drop any student who has not been attending. You can use the printed roster (or print out a new one, it’s available from a link on the “My courses” section on your MyMiami page), check off the student you want to drop, and return it to one of the Records & Registration windows in Johnston Hall. Or e-mail midrecreg@muohio.edu or call 513-727-3290 (73290 on campus). It is very important that you eliminate students who may not actually be enrolled in your classes by the 15th working day of the semester (Sept. 7 in the Fall; Jan. 25 in the spring) in order to keep the campus from being penalized by the state by having these students listed as “noncompleters” in your course.

Note: It is a simple process by the way, to reinstate a student next week if the situation merits.

First 20 percent of classes (end of third week for full-semester courses): If a student drops a course during the first 20 percent of the course, no grade or other designation will appear on the student's official record.

First 60 percent of classes (end of ninth week for full-semester courses): A student may withdraw from a course after the first 20 percent of the course and before the end of 60 percent of the course, and grade of W will appear on the student's official record. A W is not calculated in the student's grade point average. Students will need your signature on a form to withdraw from the class. Your signature does not imply agreement with or approval of the student’s action, merely acknowledgement that the student is withdrawing from the course.

Final 40 percent of classes: Once a class is 60 percent completed, class rosters remain fixed, and all students will receive a final grade for the course. If they wish to leave the course without a grade at that point, their only option is to file an appeal and participate in a rather complicated and difficult appeals process.

If a student is found guilty of academic dishonesty in a course, and withdraws from the course, the student will receive the grade W(AD) for the course, and a grade of F will be calculated in the student's grade point average.

Students need to be aware that dropping or withdrawing from a course is a formal administrative procedure; merely ceasing to attend class is not the same as dropping it or withdrawing. They are responsible for registering, paying, and attending classes. No students may be admitted to, or receive credit for, a course in which they are not properly registered and paid. Registration must be completed by the close of the fifth day of classes each semester except for the summer terms, in which the time line is shorter. Authority to extend this deadline is vested in the University Registrar.

See the Academic Calendar (pages 13-16 of this manual) for key dates and deadlines for the current academic year.

See the section on “Attendance” (page 8 of this manual) for information on an instructor’s right to drop a student for non-attendance.

Repeated Courses. A student may repeat any course for which no credit has been granted. A student may repeat only once for credit a course in which credit has previously been earned. All grades are counted in the cumulative average, but the credit hours earned in the course will count only once toward graduation. This rule does not apply to those courses designated by a department as being repeatable, nor does it supersede Section 1.2.H on repetition of credit/no-credit courses. A student may, with the instructor's permission, audit a course in which hours have previously been received toward graduation (see Section 1.2.I).
