Academic Advising
Academic Advising at MUM is important! Every student is encouraged to work
with the faculty or staff advisor assigned to them. Your advisor can help
you identify career and life goals, select classes, and prepare for professional
life after graduation.
You must have an advisor’s signature to register for classes for the
first time. Should you be placed on Academic Probation, you will need an advisor’s
signature to register for classes each term until you are back in good academic
standing.
Here are some things to keep in mind about your relationship with your academic
advisor:
- Your academic advisor likes working with students and knows a
lot about the profession you want to enter and the classes you need.
- Academic advisors can also help you clarify career goals. We have
wonderful advisors here, so take advantage of their expertise!
- Advising is a relationship between you and your academic advisor.
You need to do your part! Always bring your Degree Audit Report (DAR) and
Miami University Bulletin to advising appointments. If you’re coming
in to schedule classes, make sure you’ve looked over your degree requirements.
Advising at MUM is not one person telling another person what classes to
take.
- Academic advisors have different ways for students to schedule
meetings with them. Give yours a call and find out if they want you to send
an email message, call them, sign up on a sheet on their office door, or
any other way. You need to initiate the meeting…your advisor won’t
come looking for you!
- If you need help with things like personal issues, disability
services, or choosing a major, please contact the Office of Student Services
(Johnston Hall 001, 727-3440).
If you can’t remember your advisor’s name or contact information,
a list of all campus advisors is here www.mid.muohio.edu/studentservices/campusadvisors.pdf
Even if you don’t yet have a major, you do have an advisor. There are
advisors in the Office of Student Services who work with students who are
undeclared in their majors. Call 513 727-3440 to contact the advisors for
undeclared students.
