Illuminati is now open to submissions from student writers around the globe. Please adhere to the following guidelines or your work may be automatically deleted from our servers or returned to you unread.
WHO
Submissions are open ONLY to STUDENTS enrolled at two year campuses. That
includes community colleges, two year “satellite” and regional
campuses of four year universities, and other similar institutions. If you’re
not sure if your program fits into our definition of a two-year college,
query us.
WHAT
We are open to any genre, style, or voice. You may submit work in ONLY ONE
of the following categories:
• fiction (no more than one story; 2,500 words/10 page maximum)
• creative nonfiction (no more than one essay, 2,500 words/10 page
maximum)
• poetry (up to three poems; any length, though shorter is better)
• artwork (up to three pieces; 600 x 600 pixels maximum)
• multimedia (one piece; keep it short)
We are happy to consider work previously published in other journals, provided you have the proper permissions. Please inform of us of the original publisher in your cover letter.
WHEN
Illuminati Online publishes twice per year, once in August and again in
January. We accept submissions year round, but make publishing decisions
approximately six weeks before an issue is published.
HOW
Please proofread your submissions for spelling, punctuation, and grammatical
errors before submitting. We’ll correct obvious errors as best we
can. An error-riddled submission will ruin your chances of publication.
Under no circumstances will we accept original copies of written work or art. We only accept submissions via email attachment (see address below). Written work may be submitted as DOC, RTF, OR TXT files. Artwork may be submitted as JPG, GIF, or PNG files. We also accept multimedia files submitted as MPG, WAV, WMV.
The subject line of your email must contain the phrase "Illuminati Online" or it may be deleted by our spam filters.
Cover page must be attached. Include the following on your cover page:
• Attention: Illuminati Online• Your name
• Your university-assigned email address (if you use another email account instead
• of your university email, notify us of it, but still include the university assigned address)
• Your phone number
• The name and web site address of the two-year campus you attend
• A brief introduction with your submission that describes how you wrote it (your
writing process), or why you wrote it (your inspiration for the piece), or what it might mean to the audience, or any other pertinent contextual information you feel is important. Your introduction helps to facilitate your work’s use in classrooms. Introductions should be no more than 200 words. If you choose, you may also include a headshot of yourself.
You will be notified of your submission status by email form letter approximately two weeks after the judging session. Please do not submit more work until after you hear from us.
Final selections are made by a judging panel that may consist of students, faculty or staff of Miami University Middletown.
By submitting to Illuminati Online, you attest that your submission is your own, original work. We acquire the right to publish your work, to archive your work online permanently, and to republish your work in a print or web-based anthology. All other rights revert to the author (after we publish it, your work belongs to you—do whatever you want with it). If you republish your work elsewhere, we require that you cite Illuminati as the original publisher.
