Miami Middletown Downtown August Events Scheduled

In August, Miami Middletown Downtown will host a book club and two community forums. Events are free and open to the public.

On Monday, Aug. 3, a community forum will meet from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. to discuss the Downtown Stories, Community Visions project. Project organizer Leah DePriest is a graduate student in Urban Planning at Miami University. The project seeks to give the community an active voice in establishing a common vision for the future of downtown Middletown. Community members are invited to share their stories and opinions about downtown Middletown with DePriest. For more information, contact Leah DePriest at downtownstories@gmail.com.

On Saturday, Aug. 8, a community forum will meet from 2 - 4 p.m. to discuss the Downtown Stories, Community Visions project. This is the final scheduled community forums to explore topics related to downtown Middletown and revitalization. For more information, contact Leah DePriest at downtownstories@gmail.com.

On Wednesday, Aug. 19, the Booking It! Non-Fiction Book Conversations group will meet at 5 p.m. to discuss Conquering Gotham: Building Penn Station and Its Tunnels by Jill Jonnes. Set in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., Conquering Gotham is the history of a political and engineering battle that forever changed New York's physical and psychological geography. Learn how the Pennsylvania Railroad secretly assembled land for a terminal in the Tenderloin vice district, taking on J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, Teddy Roosevelt and Boss William Croker. Hey to be Interim Dean

Jeanne Hey, professor of political science and director of international studies at Miami University, has agreed to become interim dean of Miami University Middletown for 2009-10, effective August 10.

Kelly Cowan, who has served Miami Middletown as interim dean and dean since 2005, announced her resignation from that post May 27. A national search for a successor to Cowan will continue this fall. Cowan, a microbiologist, will begin serving a one-year appointment as a special community liaison August 10 to continue the campus's ties to community until a new permanent dean is appointed.

Hey has taught at Miami since 1992. She has served on many university committees and taskforces, including the Taskforce on International Education and Study Abroad, the University Senate, the Committee to Evaluate Administrators, and the Liberal Education Special Committee on International Curriculum. In 2008-09, Hey chaired the University Fiscal Priorities and Budget Committee. As chair, she organized a special session of University Senate around the budget challenges and worked closely with senior administrators throughout the year.

"I am extremely grateful to Professor Hey for taking on this important assignment," said Jeffrey Herbst, provost.

Hey's research interests include foreign policy behavior of less developed and small states, especially in Latin America. In 1992-93, Hey was a Pew Faculty Fellow in International Studies at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. She has completed numerous teaching and research appointments in international settings, including in Edinburgh, Scotland (2007), Miami University's Dolibois European Center in Differdange, Luxembourg (1998-2000), the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) in Quito, Ecuador (1991, 1994) and at the Centre Universitaire de Luxembourg in Luxembourg City (2000).
