Miami Middletown Downtown July Events Scheduled In July, Miami Middletown Downtown will present a slate of events that includes a concert, a book club, a writing group, two community forums and a bridge club. All events are free and open to the public. Miami Middletown Downtown is located at 4 North Main Street.
On Friday, July 10, the First Friday Concert Series will feature the steel drums and vocals of Dave Leisten from 12 - 1 p.m. Steel Drum Dave will bring the tropics to Miami Middletown Downtown. Leisten is a popular entertainer throughout the tri-state and Band Director at Middletown High School. Canceled: Will meet on August 19. On Wednesday, July 15, the Booking It! Non-Fiction Book Conversations group will meet at 5 p.m. to discuss Conquering Gotham: Building Penn Station and Its Tunnels by Jill Jonnes. Set in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., Conquering Gotham is the history of a political and engineering battle that forever changed New York's physical and psychological geography. Learn how the Pennsylvania Railroad secretly assembled land for a terminal in the Tenderloin vice district, taking on J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, Teddy Roosevelt and Boss William Croker. On Thursday, July 16, the Bridge Club will meet at 7 p.m. This is an organizational meeting for those interested in playing bridge. If you have ever wanted to learn the game of bridge, help others learn, or meet and play with other bridge enthusiasts, then this club is for you! On Thursday, July 23, a community forum will meet at 5:30 pm to discuss the Downtown Stories, Community Visions project. Project organizer Leah DePriest, is a graduate student in Urban Planning at Miami University. The project seeks to give the community an active voice in establishing a common vision for the future of downtown Middletown. The community is invited to share their stories and opinions about downtown Middletown with DePriest. Ultimately, the information DePriest gathers may aid city planners and designers in downtown revitalization efforts. This is the first of four free community forums. On Saturday, July 25, the Illuminati Writing Group will meet at 2 p.m. This casual writing and workshopping group is for all levels and genres of writing. Peer critique and writing exercises will help you polish your craft while having fun with other local writers. New attendees must RSVP to Michelle Lawrence at illuminati@muohio.edu.
On Tuesday, July 28, a community forum will meet at 5:30 pm to discuss the Downtown Stories, Community Visions project. Department of Nursing Invites Comments for Accreditation PurposesA message from Paulette Worcester, DNS, RN, CFNP

Department of Nursing
The Miami University Department of Nursing is seeking initial review by the
Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for accreditation of our
baccalaureate of science program in nursing, including the RN-BSN completion
option. CCNE invites written and signed third party comments from
communities of interest that are affected by the Department's programs.
We invite comments from current students, members of the university
community, local and state nursing professional organizations and practicing
nurses who work with students. Members of the evaluation team consider all
comments in their review of the program; however, comments are not shared
with the Department.
Comments will be accepted by CCNE until September 10, 2009, which is 30 days
prior to the accreditation visit. Comments should be sent to the following

Nine Earn Academic All-Conference HonorsThe Ohio Regional Campus Conference (ORCC) has recognized nine student-athletes at Miami University Middletown as Academic All-Conference for the second semester.
In women's basketball, Randi Bargo of Brookville and Shandar Musselman of Middletown earned Academic All-Conference honors.
In women's softball, Chelsea Collins of Franklin and Shayna Reed of Eaton earned Academic All-Conference honors.
In men's tennis Ryan Gaston of Middletown and in golf Tyler Kilburn of Dayton were the honorees.
In baseball Phillip Dickerson of Liberty Township, Brian Sheppard of Beavercreek and Brandon Ward of Beavercreek earned Academic All-Conference honors.
"All of the All-Conference picks earned at least a 3.0 grade point average while carrying at least 12 hours," said MUM Interim Athletic Director Cheryl Miller. "These students put in long hours, with practice and home and away games, yet they still manage to excel academically. Their energy and commitment are definitely worthy of this honor."
Other campuses in the conference are Ohio State University's Newark campus, Ohio University's Chillicothe, Lancaster, Eastern and Zanesville campuses, University of Akron-Wayne, the University of Cincinnati's Clermont campus and Miami University's Hamilton campus.

Chemistry professors receive American Chemical Society service awardJerry and Mickey Sarquis, a husband and wife team of Miami University chemistry professors, have been honored with the 2009 Outstanding Service Award from the Cincinnati Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS). This award is presented in recognition of the professors' meritorious service to the Cincinnati Section and states that the two have established the benchmark for excellence as Chemistry Educators.
Mickey and Jerry began their careers at Miami University in the mid 1970s and have had a lasting impact on the way chemistry is taught and learned in college and K-12 classrooms across the country. Jerry teaches chemistry on Miami's Oxford campus where he focuses on accessing and retaining underrepresented groups in the sciences, peer-led teaching and learning, and other student-oriented teaching methods. Mickey teaches at the Middletown Campus and is also director of Miami's Center for Chemistry Education, which has reached more than 21,500 kindergarten through college educators within the U.S. In 2006, Mickey Sarquis was named Chemist of the Year by the Cincinnati Section. The two are co-authors of several textbooks and teacher resource books and are regularly featured speakers at national and international science teacher meetings.
The American Chemical Society is the world's largest scientific society. The Cincinnati Section of the American Chemical Society promotes education, research and interest in chemical science and industry and the worldwide application of chemistry to the needs of humanity. The section is composed of over 1,600 members in southwest Ohio, northern Kentucky and southeast Indiana engaged in manufacturing, university and high school education, government and private laboratories as well as other institutions.

Miami Middletown Students Receive Peabody ScholarshipsMiami University Middletown has named eight Peabody Scholarships recipients who will receive a total of $9,600 for the 2009-10 academic year. The recipients are: Jacob Mink and Jacob Shiflett of Middletown; . Doug Cheek of Trenton; . Angela French and Autumn Meade of Franklin; . Melissa Barahona-Cliche and Brian Cavanaugh of Miamisburg. and Kelly Spurlock of Germantown.
The Peabody Scholarships were established in 1976 by the Western College Alumnae Association. They are awarded annually to assist non-traditional, mature students whose education has been interrupted or delayed by career, marriage or other circumstances.
The scholarship is named for Helen Peabody, the first principal of the Western Female Seminary, which later became Western College.

MUM to Host Sessions on Health Career ProgramsMiami Middletown will host information sessions on June 12 and July 10 for two new associate degree health career programs: Health Information Management and Respiratory Care Technology. Both sessions will be held from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in Johnston Hall 137.
A part of the Greentree system, both programs enable students to complete one year of coursework (29-38 credits) at Miami University Middletown and then transfer to Cincinnati
State to complete the remainder of the program part-time over a two year period. Both programs allow students to take their Cincinnati State courses with minimal travel to the campus. The Health Information Management courses are offered online and the Respiratory Care Technology courses will be offered in the Middletown area. Clinical experiences are available in Butler County and the Cincinnati/Dayton areas.

On Wednesday, June 17, the Booking It! Non-Fiction Book Conversations group will meet at 5 p.m. to discuss We Bought A Zoo by Benjamin Mee. Mee tells the story of how the dilapidated Dartmoor Wildlife Park, populated by around 400 exotic animals, was transformed into the busy Dartmoor Zoological Park by an ordinary family using a trial-and-error method. The book also describes how the family coped during the gradual deterioration of Mee's wife due to a brain tumor and how they coped with her loss. Collins, Gaston Receive MUM Scholar-Athlete AwardMiami Middletown student athletes Chelsea Collins and Ryan Gaston have been named recipients of the 2009 C. Eugene Bennett Award at Miami University Middletown.
Collins, a sophomore speech pathology and audiology major from Carlisle, is a member of the MUM softball team. She earned the honor of Scholar Athlete in her sport and currently has a cumulative GPA of 3.86. She is the daughter of Randall and Cindy Collins of Carlisle.
Gaston, a sophomore in the School of Fine Arts from Middletown, is a member of the MUM tennis team. He earned Academic All-Conference honors this year with a cumulative 4.0 GPA and was named Scholar Athlete in his sport. He is the son of David and Beth Gaston of Middletown.
The C. Eugene Bennett Award was established in 1985 in honor of Dr. Bennett, Miami University Middletown's first executive director (1965-1986), in recognition of his emphasis on scholarship and his strong support of the Middletown campus athletic program. This award is presented annually to the male and female student athletes with the highest grade point average for the academic year.
