Symphonic Band Holiday Concert Dec. 6

The Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band will perform their annual holiday concert at Miami University Middletown on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 2:30 p.m. in the Dave Finkelman Auditorium. Come early to hear Christmas selections performed by a brass ensemble.

Composed by band member David Shaffer, "Princeton Variations" will be conducted by retired Princeton High School Director of Bands Sam D. Reynolds, who is currently serving as a visiting instructor in the Department of Music at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Selections will include, Alfred Reed's "Russian Christmas," Andre' Jutras' "C'est Noel," Newell H. Long's "Christmas Rhapsody," Percy Grainger's "Handel in the Strand," Clifton Williams' "Castle Gap," Robert Dwyer Joyce's "The Boys of Wexford" and Morton Gould's "When Johnny Comes Marching Home."

Immediately following the concert and a visit from Santa, the band will provide complimentary refreshments. This event is free and open to the public. Miami University Middletown is located at 4200 East University Boulevard.

Bates Named Student of the Month

Susan Bates has been named Miami University Middletown's Student of the Month for September. The senior from West Chester is a business major.

Bates was nominated for her leadership role in organizing fellow classmates as volunteers at Middfest International's History/Science exhibit. Her efforts helped insure this exhibit's success as a part of Middfest.

"Susan is an outstanding example of the quality and dedication Miami University Middletown student's display in the community," says nominator Danielson Kisanga.

The Student of the Month award is given in recognition of students who make a significant contribution to the campus either in or out of the classroom.

MUM's Campus Visit on Dec. 8

Miami University Middletown will host a Campus Visit Program focused on "Making Undergraduates Magnificent" at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8 in the Campus Community Center.

The evening will feature presentations on admission, financial aid/scholarships, information on college majors at Miami and an overview of the application process. Current Miami Middletown students will host a question and answer session and will serve as tour guides for those wishing to take a brief tour of the campus.

Anyone wishing to apply for admission for Spring 2010 may do so at this program by bringing a high school transcript, GED or current college transcript and the $35 application fee. This will be the final Campus Visit Program before the Spring Semester begins on January 11.

Check-in will begin at 4:45 p.m. followed by light refreshments. All are welcome at this event and reservations are encouraged. Enameling, Etched Glass Workshops Offered

Susan Marine, associate professor of chemistry at Miami University Middletown, will lead two hands-on workshops in December.

The Introduction to Enameling class will be held from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 in Levey Hall Room 209. Students will enamel a copper pendant, with the first pendant costing $15 and each additional pendant at $10.

The chemistry and glass ornaments class will be held from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. on Saturday, Dec.12 in Levey Hall Room 209. Participants will learn to etch flat glass ornaments or hollow ornaments. All ornaments are $5 each.

Maidens IV is Next Free Friday

Miami University Middletown's Fantastic Free Fridays continues its tenth season on Friday, Dec. 4 with a 10 a.m. performance by the Celtic-folk group Maidens IV. Seating is limited for this performance.

Maidens IV is composed of four sisters and features four-part harmony, four instruments and eight dancing feet. This performance is recommended for all ages.

A generous donation from the Bever family of Oxford is again helping to support the Fantastic Free Fridays program. Fantastic Free Fridays performances are open to the public.

Miami Middletown Downtown November Events Scheduled

In November, Miami Middletown Downtown will host a writing group and an open mic night. Both events are free and open to the public.

On Saturday, Nov. 21, the Illuminati Writing Group will meet at 2 p.m. This casual writing and workshopping group is for all levels and genres of writing. Peer critique and writing exercises will help you polish your craft while having fun with other local writers. New attendees must RSVP to Michelle Lawrence at illuminati@muohio.edu.

On Saturday, Nov. 21, the monthly open mic night will be held from 8 - 10 p.m. All ages, experience levels and types of performers (singers, musicians, writers, actors, etc.) are encouraged to join the fun. For more information, contact Kip Moore at wmoore@coxohio.com.

Bluegrass Legend J.D. Crowe to Perfrom Nov. 21

Miami University Middletown's Artist and Lecture Series continues its 2009-2010 season with a performance by bluegrass legend J.D Crowe and The New South at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21 in the campus' Dave Finkelman Auditorium.

International Bluegrass Music Association Hall of Fame inductee and two-time Banjo Player of the Year, Crowe (www.jdcrowe.net) began his musical career with Jimmy Martin's Sunny Mountain Boys in the mid-1950s.

Today, his name is synonymous with unsurpassed mastery of bluegrass tradition, bold innovation, the nurturing of fresh talent and an uncompromising devotion to musical excellence. With a compelling blend of youth and experience, tradition and bold creativity, this is a band as close to the heart of bluegrass today as it — or anyone else — has ever been.

Tickets for this performance are $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens (over 65) and Miami faculty/staff and $10 for students and youth (18 and younger). Holiday Bazaar Set for Nov. 20, 21

Get a head start on the holidays at Miami University Middletown's Eighth Annual MUM Yum Holiday Bazaar, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20 and 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21 in the Campus Community Center.

This year's MUM Yum will include: home made crafts, Longaberger baskets, holiday centerpieces, baked goods, fudge, hot cider and the traditional "MUM Yum" tree. The Bazaar proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

This event is sponsored by Miami Middletown's C.I.V.I.C. (Campus Individuals Volunteering in the Community) organization. For more information, call (513) 727-3205.

Blood Drive Set for Nov. 19

Miami University Middletown will host a blood drive from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19. Donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh 110 pounds, be in good general health and must bring a photo I.D. that includes their full name.

Middletown Downtown Redevelopment Forum Scheduled

The Miami Middletown Community Building Institute (CBI) will hold its second public forum on Thursday, Nov. 5 to present a strategic plan for redevelopment of downtown Middletown that was developed by Woolpert Associates. This plan was commissioned by the City of Middletown with the support and input of a group of downtown stakeholders. The final report will be presented by a representative from Woolpert.

The City of Middletown, Middletown Community Foundation and the downtown stakeholders group have asked Miami Middletown's CBI to lead the process from this point on -- beginning with presenting the plan and gathering input and reactions from the community, helping to identify priorities and connecting the goals of the plan with the people and resources who will carry them out.

The forum will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Campus and Community Center at Miami University Middletown.
