Miami Middletown Downtown February Events Scheduled

In February, Miami Middletown Downtown will present a slate of events that includes a book club, a concert, a writing group, an Open Mic Night and a chess club. All events are free and open to the public. Miami Middletown Downtown is located at 4 North Main Street, former home of the Masonic Temple, in Middletown.

On Friday, Feb. 6, Native Flute Soloist Janice Trytten will present a concert from the "Visitor from the Plains" series from 12 - 1 p.m. Trytten enjoys parallel lives as a native flute player and as a professional horn player in the Middletown Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati area. Brown bag your lunch—hot drinks and homemade cookies are complimentary. The First Friday's Noontime Concert Series is sponsored by the First Methodist Church of Middletown. On Wednesday, Feb. 18, the Booking It! Non-Fiction Book Conversations group will meet at 5 p.m. to discuss The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Maclom Gladwell. Gladwell follows the growth of "word-of-mouth epidemics" through simple, clear explanations and entertainingly illustrative anecdotes, such as comparing the pedagogical methods of Sesame Street and Blue's Clues, or explaining why it would be even easier to play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon with the actor Rod Steiger. On Saturday, Feb. 21, the Illuminati Writing Group will meet at 2 p.m. This casual writing and work-shopping group is for all levels and genres of writing. On Thursday, Feb. 26, the Chess Club will meet at 6 p.m. If you have ever wanted to learn the game of chess, help others learn, or meet and play with other chess enthusiasts, then the All the King's Men Chess Club is for you! For more information, contact Mauricio Benty at bentym@muohio.edu.

On Saturday, Feb. 28, the music hour will feature an Open Mic Night from 6 - 8 p.m. All ages, experience levels and types of performers (singers, musicians, writers, actors, etc.) are encouraged to join the fun. Fantastic Free Fridays Continue at Miami Middletown

Miami University Middletown's Fantastic Free Fridays series continues its ninth season on Friday, Feb. 6 with a performance at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. of Coretta Scott King and the Fight for Freedom presented by Artreach Theatre.

Born in Alabama, Coretta Scott King overcame childhood adversity in the segregated South and attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. A talented singer, she would go on to play an integral role in the American Civil Rights Movement, not only as the wife of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but as an independent woman. The woman behind the man, Coretta continues to be an inspiration to the nation and the world. This performance is recommended for grades 3-8.

Other Fantastic Free Fridays spring performances are: Thaddeus Rex: Read Like a Rock Star (10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on February 27, this show has limited seating), Tom Sawyer by The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati (10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on March 20) and Son Del Caribe (10 a.m. on April 24).

A generous donation from the Bever family of Oxford is again helping to support the Fantastic Free Fridays program.

Miami Middletown Sponsors Black History Events

Feb 3, African-American Read-In with special guest Edwina Blackwell Clark, publisher of The Middletown Journal, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., Johnston Hall Balcony Lounge, free. A variety of literature representative of the African-American experience will be shared, free.

Feb. 4, Galen, Master Flutist, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., Hawk Haven, Johnston Hall, free. Show includes a performance, music trivia, an interactive session and prizes.

Feb. 16, Brown Bag Lunch, Lecture & Discussion Featuring Flonzie Brown-Wright, Should we still celebrate Black History Month?, 12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m., Miami Middletown Downtown, 4 N. Main St., free. Brown-Wright, lecturer, author and former Miami University Middletown Scholar in Residence will be available to sign her book Looking Back to Move Ahead.

Feb. 18, Flonzie Brown-Wright Lecture on Looking Back to Move Ahead, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Johnston Hall, free. This lecture will provide an insight into Civil Rights history and its culture.

Feb. 19, Soul Food Luncheon & Extravaganza, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., Johnston Hall 142. Experience a taste of "soul food," reminiscent of the South, $7. Live musical entertainment by Second Wind Ensemble and vendors featuring African American merchandise and crafts.

Miami's Regional Campuses Offer Late Start Classes

Miami University Middletown will be offering 10 late start courses beginning January 26.

Courses offered include Ecology of North America, Public Expression & Critical Inquiry, Computers, Computer Science and Society, English Composition, World Regional Geography, Environmental Geology, American History, Elementary Algebra, Professional Development, Politics and Global Issues, and Religion and Modern Culture.

Campus to Host Scholarship Blitz

Miami University Middletown will host a "Scholarship Blitz" program for potential and current students from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24 in the Campus and Community Center.

Sessions on writing effective scholarship essays and completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are scheduled for students and parents attending this free event.

"Three out of four full-time students at Miami Middletown are currently receiving financial aid of some kind," said MUM Director of Admission and Financial Aid Stacey Adams. "It is an area that all current and potential students should investigate, whether they plan on attending Miami University or another institution. This workshop is a quick and easy way to get started." Miami Middletown has scholarships based on academic merit, financial need, ethnicity, major and many other criteria.

Catherine Bishop-Clark receives Knox Teaching Award

Catherine Bishop-Clark, associate dean and professor of computer information and technology at Miami University Middletown, was awarded the E. Philips Knox Teaching Award at Miami University's fall commencement Dec. 19.

The $3,000 award was established by E. Philips Knox (Miami '68) to recognize creative, innovative and engaging teaching methods at the undergraduate level. Miami's committee on the enhancement of learning and teaching selected Bishop-Clark for the honor.

This is the 14th year the award has been presented.

Bishop-Clark's scholarship is connected to her teaching and the students served at the regional campuses. She helped develop new courses in computing and programming and has contributed to the development of a recently established department of computer and information technology. Her research focuses on online learning and computer-mediated communications; cognition, personality and computer programming; and attitudes about the mixed-age college classroom.

Bishop-Clark joined Miami's faculty in 1989.
