Redskin to RedHawk Lecture at Miami MiddletownA lecture on the development and transition of Miami's mascot from "Redskins" to "RedHawks" and the current relationship Miami has with the Miami tribe of Oklahoma will be presented by Bobbe Burke at Miami University Middletown on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. in Johnston Hall Room 136.
Burke has been the Coordinator of Activities and Relations with the Miami Tribe since 1994, when an ad hoc committee determined that a staff person was needed to help oversee and coordinate the various connections and possibilities that were developing. In this role, she serves as the contact point for people wishing to make connections with the Miami Tribe and as a liaison with staff of the tribe to coordinate visits to and from Oklahoma.
Miami University's relationship with the Miami Tribe began in the early 1970s. While Burke was exploring the details of that early relationship to be able to document it fully, another interest surfaced—how did Miami University begin and use a Native American mascot? That led to a several year research project that tells that story.
This lecture is free and open to the public. Miami University Middletown is located at 4200 E. University Blvd.
