Brewer Named Student of the Month

Brittany Merrelle Brewer has been named Miami University Middletown's Student of the Month for December. The junior from Middletown is majoring in social work

Brewer was nominated for the award for her commitment to the campus and community. She recently organized a two week long food drive for the Franklin Food Bank. Last year Brewer worked with her church to make sure needy children received Christmas presents.

She was also recognized for her outstanding work in three offices on campus. "Brittany is a good student, an excellent student employee and an asset to the community," says nominator Danielle Blevins. "She goes above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome and taken care of." She is the daughter of Chris and Janet Brewer of Middletown.

The Student of the Month award is given in recognition of students who make a significant contribution to the campus either in or out of the classroom.

Black History Events Cover Wide Range of Topics

Miami University Middletown is sponsoring a number of events for Black History Month. All are open to the public and many are free.

Feb. 4, LeAlan Jones Lecture, 4 p.m., Johnston Hall Campus and Community Center, free. Jones, a freelance journalist, was co-creator of Ghetto Life 101, National Public Radio's award-winning 1993 radio documentary.

Feb. 6, African-American Read-In with special guest LeAlan Jones, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., Johnston Hall Balcony Lounge. A variety of literature representative of the African-American experience will be shared, free.

Feb. 12, American Gangster: Fact or Fiction, discussion forum, 6 - 9 p.m., Johnston Hall 136-137, free. Discussing guilt, greed and the glamorization of gangster life. Dinner will be provided to the first 40 people in attendance.

Feb. 20, Soul Food Luncheon, 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Johnston Hall 142. Experience a taste of "soul food," reminiscent of the South, $7.

Feb. 21, Dr. Pamela "Safisha Nzingha Adeleke" Hill Lecture, 4 - 6 p.m., Johnston Hall Balcony Lounge, free.

Feb. 25, RIP: Laying Derogatory Terms to Rest, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Hawk Haven, Johnston Hall, free.

Miami Middletown Sponsors Immigration Discussion

Miami University Middletown's Diversity Council will present a panel discussion on immigration from 12-1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29 in the Campus Community Center. The panel will discuss the legal, social and humanitarian issues surrounding immigration as they impact the region and will also address legal and illegal immigration.

Jewish Family Services' Director of Resettlement and Acculturation Barbara Forbus and Resettlement Coordinator Lilly Narusevic will offer information about their agency's services and the immigrant issues they confront. Lt. Rodney Muterspaw, Middletown Police Department, will describe law enforcement issues as immigration impacts them. Jackie Phillips, Director of Nursing for the Middletown City Health Department, will talk about the impact of immigrants on health services in Middletown and how the immigrants' health needs are addressed. Lea Webb, an attorney who practices immigration and family law, will present a description of immigration laws and their practical application.

Miami Unveils Corporate and Community Institute

Miami University has announced the formation of a new resource for organizations and individuals throughout the region, the Miami University Corporate and Community Institute. The name reflects the regional approach that the Institute will take as it provides solutions to the training needs of organizations and individuals.

The new name also reflects the merging of the continuing education functions on Miami's Middletown and Hamilton campuses and the future expansion to the Voice of America Learning Center, scheduled to open in January 2009.

Patricia L. McNab has been named the Institute's Senior Director. She joined Miami Middletown in 2001 as Program Manager in the Office of Continuing Education and Business and Industry Center and has served as Middletown's Acting Director since 2006. Prior to this she held marketing positions at Reynolds and Reynolds in Dayton. She received a bachelor's degree in marketing from the University of Cincinnati.

For business and industry, the Corporate and Community Institute emphasizes training customized for the individual client. "Today, competitive advantage depends most critically on the skills of the workforce," said McNab. "As the workforce is changing, so is the way employees are being trained for continuing success in the rapidly changing marketplace. The Corporate and Community Institute is poised to help area employers achieve performance excellence through programs focused on executive coaching, organizational development, quality and safety management, technology, human resource planning, job profiling and customer service, to name a few."

An EnterpriseOhio Network affiliate, the Corporate and Community Institute is part of a state-wide alliance designed to promote the growth and development of Ohio businesses.

For the individual, the Institute will continue to offer non-credit courses in professional development, computer technology, personal enrichment, online learning, fitness and summer youth programs.

"Our team of experienced workforce development specialists are ready to assist organizations, large and small, with defining needs and implementing innovative solutions quickly, competently and cost effectively to achieve their greatest potential," said Kathy Weber, Director of the Corporate and Community Institute, Hamilton Campus. Community MLK Events Set for Jan. 19-21

A forum, youth concert, unity service and community march will highlight Middletown's In the Spirit and Footsteps of Dr. King community celebration, Jan. 19-21.

A forum on Social Justice in the New Millennium, featuring Civil Rights Activist Curtis DeYoung, will be held from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19 in Campus Community Center Room 142 at Miami University Middletown.

Also on Jan. 19 will be an I Am the Dream Youth Concert, to be held from 4 - 8:30 p.m. at Miami Middletown's Dave Finkelman Auditorium.

A Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 20 from 4 - 5:30 p.m. at Dave Finkelman Auditorium.

The final event of the celebration will be a community march from Faith United Church to Governor's Square from 10 a.m. until noon on Monday, Jan. 21. Faith United Church is located at 9 Baltimore Street, (behind Central Pastry Shop) in Middletown.

Miami Middletown Offers Late Start Classes

Miami University Middletown will be offering nine late start courses that will begin the week of January 28.

Courses offered include Computers, Computer Science and Society, English Composition, Classics of Film, Politics and Global Issues, American History, Western Civilization, Elementary Algebra and Astronomy and Space Physics.

Athletic Hall of Fame to Induct Five

Miami University Middletown has announced the second group of inductees into its athletic Hall of Fame, which honors student athletes, coaches, teams and others who have brought recognition and honor to the University during the past 41 years. Induction ceremonies for the Hall's new class will take place on Saturday, Jan. 12 at Miami Middletown and will feature a dinner catered by the Montgomery Inn.

This class of inductees includes basketball standouts Kevin Svarda (1992-95) and Heather Imfeld Conger (1995-2000), basketball and volleyball all-conference pick Kim Flick Bennett (1984-89), Miami Middletown founding faculty member and men's and women's tennis coach Don Faris (1974-1990) and the Hall's first golf inductee John Langhorne (1970-71, 74-75, 80-82).

"This class of inductees truly represents the dedication and talent that have made Miami Middletown so competitive over the years," said former Miami Middletown Athletic Director Jim Sliger. "We're proud to be able to recognize their contribution to our program."

Miami Middletown's teams have won the Ohio Regional Campus Conference (ORCC) All-Sports Award 16 times, including 11 times consecutively (1994-2004). The ORCC is made up of 10 schools, including many of the regional campuses of Ohio State, Ohio University, Akron, U.C. and Miami. Miami Middletown fields teams in baseball, women's softball, men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis and volleyball.

The induction ceremony on Jan. 12 will begin with hors d'oeuvres at 5 p.m followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and the induction ceremony at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend this event, which will be held in Miami Middletown's new Campus Community Center.

Cost for the event is $35, with all proceeds going to benefit the Greg Lansaw Scholarship Fund. Lansaw, who lost his battle with cancer three years ago, was ThunderHawk golf coach 2001-2004.

Offices Open Until 7 P.M. Next Week

Miami University Middletown's admission, financial aid, records and cashier's offices and bookstore will extend their hours until 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7 through Thursday, Jan. 10 in advance of the start of spring classes on Jan. 14. These offices will also be open until 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11 and until 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12.

All of the offices open at 8:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday and at 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday with the exception of the bookstore, which opens at 9 a.m. every day.
