New Series of Health Science Books for Teens Earns Praise

Whether you breathe it in, smear it on, drink it down, or wash it off, "stuff" in your environment can make you sick...or help you thrive. That's the message of the new Strive to Thrive!™ book series from Miami University's Center for Chemistry Education (CCE) and Terrific Science Press. This series has recently earned superb recommendations from the Consumers Guide to Afterschool Resources, designed to help educators locate high-quality science materials for after-school programs.

The Strive to Thrive! Series is a set of five activity handbooks aimed to help teens grow in a strong and healthy way. Presented in a teen-friendly, magazine-style format, the books challenge teens to explore important and timely health science issues, such as adolescent body image and skin health, germs and hygiene, water quality and bottled water, chemical safety, and indoor air pollution.

According to the Consumers Guide to Afterschool Resources , the Strive to Thrive! Series "is great fun for students, [offering] them the chance to apply scientific thinking as they address health issues they are likely to face every day… These fun, hands-on investigations encourage [students] to examine their world critically through easily reproducible activities."

Emilio DeTorre, reviewer and afterschool program expert, says that the series "offers fun, engaging, and informative science activities that require little prep time… , yet are interesting and engaging for the students. Staff need not have much prior knowledge, training, or experience leading [the] science activities and the materials are written in plain, easily digestible English."

The Strive to Thrive! Series is designed for informal, self-directed or small-group learning environments such as science clubs, youth organizations, and after-school programs. The books are also designed to draw teens' families and friends into discussions of important health topics. The five titles of the series are:

* Breathing Room! Indoor Pollution Activity Handbook covers indoor health risks due to dust mites, mold, and odorless gases.

* Lather Up! Hand Washing Activity Handbook explores how germs and diseases spread, the secrets of people's hand washing habits, and whether clean hands really keep you healthier.

* More Than Skin Deep! Skin Health Activity Handbook covers teen body image relating to skin color, how people of all skin colors can be harmed by the sun, and how people can protect themselves from sun damage.

* Safe Not Sorry Chemical Safety Activity Handbook deals with how properly reading and interpreting labels on chemical household products can save your life.

* Wet Your Whistle! Drinking Water Activity Handbook explores the bottled water craze and the science behind safe drinking water.

Each Strive to Thrive! Book features hands-on activities, magazine-style readings, thought-provoking questions, and games and puzzles. Also, the companion website at www.terrificscience.org/thrive/ offers free games, puzzles, and opportunities to learn more about each topic.

The Strive to Thrive! Series is the latest in a line of 60 books, kits, and other science products created by CCE's Terrific Science Press since 1989. Terrific Science Press publications foster quality science education that encourages teachers and students to work together to solve scientific challenges, think critically, and use their powers of observation. Through its books, kits, and teacher workshops, CCE has reached about 21,000 educators who teach 1.5 million students each year.

The Strive to Thrive! Series was developed through CCE's HealthRICH: Health Risks, Information and Choices project, funded by a Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) from the National Center for Research Resources, National Institutes of Health. The Consumers Guide to Afterschool Resources is sponsored by the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley with support from the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning at Southwest Educational Development Laboratory (SEDL).

Warren County Career Center is Gateway Partner

Miami University Middletown and the Warren County Career Center are working together to provide an alternative way for Warren County residents to complete a high school diploma and make the transition to post-secondary education.

The Gateway to Success Program is for persons age 18-21 who have not earned their high school diploma and who have been out of school for at least a year.

Through Gateway, Miami Middletown provides space on its campus and Warren County Career Center provides the curriculum and instructors. Students participating in Gateway will be going to a university campus, in an adult, post-secondary educational setting, to complete the coursework for their diploma. The program offers a flexible schedule for those with jobs and/or families.

Students in Gateway will begin with instruction through virtual resources, software and printed materials in one-on-one and small group settings, designed to help them reach their career and post-secondary goals. Students will also have the opportunity to take beginning college level courses concurrent with the remainder of their high school curriculum, and have access to the library research facilities as well as developmental educational and career support services of Miami Middletown.

"The longer a person is away from high school, the greater the challenge to continuing his or her education," said Warren County Career Center Superintendent Maggie Hess. "The Gateway program will create a much smoother pathway for young adults to return to the classroom."

"Having the opportunity to become familiar with and comfortable in a university setting as nontraditional students will ease the transition to post-secondary education," said Miami Middletown Dean Kelly Cowan. "Gateway will encourage students to make a direct connection with post-secondary education while completing their high school coursework, making college or university the logical 'next step' after they earn their diploma."
