Finance, Identity Theft Classes Offered at MUM

Smart Women Finish Rich!, a program designed by David Bach, will show students how to use money to make their lives better. The class will cover financial organization, where your money really goes and building a million dollar retirement account using a 401K or IRA. This two-hour class will begin at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 5 and the cost is $19.

Identity Theft is a workshop that will cover how identity thieves operate, tips for protecting yourself and managing day-to-day life while safeguarding your privacy. Education is the best prevention! This class will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 22 and the cost is $19.

Campus to Host State of the City Address

Miami University Middletown will host Mayor David Schiavone's State of the City Address at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27. This event, which is open to the public, will be held in the new Campus Community Center in Johnston Hall.

Dancing Wheels, Art Show Promote "Same Difference" Theme

Miami University Middletown will host two disability awareness events in February and March.

On Tuesday, Feb. 27 the Dancing Wheels group will perform at Miami Middletown at noon and at Rosa Parks Elementary School at 7 p.m.

Dancing Wheels is the first modern dance company to integrate professional stand-up and sit-down (wheelchair) dancers. Started in 1980, the Cleveland-based company has performed, taught and inspired children and adults of all abilities around the world. In the United States, Dancing Wheels presents more than 100 performances reaching audiences of 125,000 each year.

Dancing Wheels has been featured in numerous national publications and television programs including CBS Sunday Morning, CNN and Good Morning America. The company is the recipient of the 1998 Governor's Award for Outstanding Outreach in Ohio and the 1997 National Rehabilitation Achievement Award.

On Thursday, March 1, an art show from the Visionaries and Voices project will have a grand opening reception at Miami Middletown from 5 - 8 p.m. Visionaries and Voices seeks to provide a home-base for artists with disabilities. Their studio/gallery in Cincinnati was created specifically for artists with disabilities. Visionaries and Voices has been able to support over 300 local and regional artists with disabilities to make and market their works. The show will be displayed in the Campus Community Center at Miami University Middletown during the month of March.

Free and open to the public, these events will be held in Miami Middletown's new Campus Community Center in Johnston Hall. They are a collaboration between Abilities First, Butler County MRDD, Miami University, the Middletown City School District and Visionaries and Voices. These organizations have chosen the theme "Same Difference" to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities as a vital part of the communities in which they live.

Miami Alumni Middletown Chapter Features Miami Architect/Planner Guest Speaker

The Middletown Chapter of the Miami University Alumni Association will hold its annual dinner on Wednesday, March 7th, in the new Campus/Community Center on Miami's Middletown Campus.

Robert Keller, Miami's Architect and Campus Planner, is this year's guest speaker. A 1973 graduate of Miami who joined Miami's staff in 1989, Keller directs planning and construction for all of Miami's campuses, and with his staff oversees long range planning and all phases of Miami's major construction projects.

In addition to looking to Miami's future, Keller is also a student of its past, and his after dinner presentation, "Miami Then and Now," will be a visual history of how Miami developed from the first log cabin and Old Main, the original campus building, to today's latest additions to the Oxford, Hamilton and Middletown campuses.

A pre-dinner reception begins at 6 p.m. with dinner following at 7 p.m.

Miami Middletown Hosts Robin and Linda Williams

Bluegrass and Country music artists Robin and Linda Williams & Their Fine Group come to Miami University Middletown's Dave Finkelman Auditorium on Saturday, March 3 at 8 p.m.

Robin and Linda Williams have thrilled audiences for thirty years. Their now trademark tapestry of bluegrass, traditional mountain folk, Southern gospel, country, and blues is singular. Their most recent recording, Visions of Love, garnered a three-star review in USA Today upon its release and continues to receive rave reviews nationwide. From their many appearances on "A Prairie Home Companion" and "The American Radio Company" to "Austin City Limits" and "The Grand Old Opry," the Williams' music reaches deep into American traditions and, in the words of the Richmond Times Dispatch, "encompasses all that's best in country music."

Soul Food at MUM on Thursday

Miami University Middletown will host a Soul Food Luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 15 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the new Campus Community Center in Johnston Hall.

This year's menu includes fried chicken, fried catfish, greens, green beans, macaroni and cheese, candied sweet potatoes, beans, red beans and rice, pound cake, sweet potato pie, peach cobbler, cornbread and biscuits.

Cost for the meal is $6 and the public is invited to attend.

Three Miami Campuses to Host Africana Film Festival

Miami University's Oxford, Middletown and Hamilton campuses will host the area's first Africana Film Festival, March 26-29.

The four-day event includes screenings of 17 films from 11 African countries. The films include: Afro@Digital, And So Angels Die, Arlit, Drum, Fathers, The Hero, Mahaleo, Colonial Misunderstanding, The Night of the Truth, Why, Shadow Dancing, Zulu Love Letter, Sisters in Law, Animation in Creation and A Man from the River Niger.

A panel of African cineastes and international scholars will lead discussion of the films. They include: Sokhna Amar, Awam Amkpa, Debra Boyd, Gaston Kabore, Zola Maseko, Ntongela Masilela, Fanta Nacro, Sada Niang, Jean-Marie Teno, Mellissa Thackway and Frank Ukadike.

"I believe that the festival will offer a unique platform for conveying African artistic styles and craft in film," said Dr. Babacar Camara, Miami University faculty member and festival convener. "While the images of stereotypes, myths and depressed cultural experiences continue to be drawn out in the media and curricula, this festival will show films with positive messages and educational value. It will present images of Africa not usually available in the general media, created by Africans on issues pertaining to their societies."

The festival will begin in Oxford on Monday, March 26 and will travel to the Middletown campus on March 27, to Hamilton on March 28 and back to Oxford for its final day, March 29.

Cancelled-Public Invited to Citizens' Advisory Council

The Citizens' Advisory Council of Miami University Middletown will hold its regular meeting at noon on Tuesday, February 13. The public is invited to attend this meeting, which will be held in Room 142 of the new Campus Community Center in Johnston Hall.

The Citizen's Advisory Council is composed of 15 members from Miami Middletown's service region who serve as a channel for community interaction with the campus. The purpose of the Council is to represent the community's expectations and needs to the campus and to provide the campus with a direct means of communication to the community.

Time will be allotted for public comment. Faculty, staff and students are also encouraged to attend this meeting.

Get Tips at Golf Clinic

Too cold to go outside? Why not get a jump-start on next season's golf game by attending the 9th Annual Golf Clinic at Miami University Middletown?

PGA Professional Tony Elieff of the N.C.R. Country Club will be at Miami University Middletown on Saturday, March 3 to provide individualized instruction covering putting, chipping and full swing. Mike McGee, former PGA professional will also be assisting in the clinic. Sessions will be held at 9 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Each golfer will work in a small group and will receive a total of 2 hours of instruction.

The Golf Clinic will be held at the Bennett Recreation Center at Miami University Middletown. The cost is $40 with proceeds benefiting the Middletown campus golf team. Do not delay as this clinic has a limited enrollment.

Brian Elleman Named Student of the Month

Brian Elleman has been named Miami University Middletown's Student of the Month for November. The sophomore from Lebanon is majoring in nursing.

Elleman was nominated for the award for his outstanding work for the Miami University Middletown's Nursing Resource Center. As a Lab Assistant he is an innovative problem solver, has led tutoring sessions for students in the Center, and draws on his medic background and service in Iraq to answer fellow student's questions. Elleman helps create a friendly and helpful atmosphere in the Center. He has represented Miami University Middletown's nursing program before National League for Nursing site visitors.

"Brian is the best example of a Miami student in his ethics and caring toward others," said nominator Donna Workman, Director of the Nursing Resource Center.

He recently led an effort to keep a family from being evicted, and helped to provide them with a Christmas tree and presents for the children. He still finds time to excel academically.

First-time Students Honored for Academic Achievement

Miami Middletown had 17 first-time students who earned a 3.8 or above during fall semester 2006 with a course load of at least 12 hours. These students were invited to attend an Academic Recognition Banquet in Oxford.

They are: Robert Davis, Joseph Mitchell, Allison Murphy, and Janay Walker of Middletown; Jason Gilbert of Trenton; Jonathan Evans, Jeremy Neal, Anthony Pesarek and Rebecca Taylor of Springboro; Chastity Deaton, Angela French, Michelle Reimer, Kimberly Rogers and Jeffery Sams of Franklin; Monica Sommers of Carlisle; Sharon Jones of Camden; and Steven Schneeberger of Cincinnati.
