Campus Closed Dec. 23 - Jan. 1 for Winter BreakMiami University Middletown will be closed for winter break Dec. 23, 2006 - Jan. 1, 2007.
Normal hours (8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Friday) will resume on January 2. The campus bookstore opens at 9 a.m. on these days. Records and registration, the cashier's office, business office and bookstore will be open 10 am - 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6.
Second semester classes begin on Monday, January 8.

Two Business Technology students have been awarded $1,200 scholarships from the Ohio Society of CPAs.Two Miami Middletown Business Technology students have been awarded $1,200 scholarships from the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Tiffany Bowser Elliott of Eaton is a senior majoring in accounting technology.
Ronald Hall of Middletown is a junior majoring in accounting technology and computer-based management.
The Ohio Society of CPAs encourages college students to study and major in accounting. The Miami Valley Chapter was instrumental in establishing and supporting the business technology programs at Miami University's regional campuses and has funded this scholarship annually since 1983.
"These are excellent, deserving students," said Vernon Huber, a CPA who teaches a class in Federal Income Tax Procedures. "I've seen what they can do in the classroom and I know they will put the scholarship funds to good use."

Campus loses founder, friendEarl V. Thesken, one of the persons responsible for the existence of Miami's regional campuses, has passed away at the age of 99.
He was born at College Hill, near Cincinnati, on April 13, 1907. He received a bachelor of Arts degree from Miami in 1930 and a Master of Arts degree in 1943. He also attended Ohio State University. He was a high school teacher, principal and superintendent before returning to Miami in 1955.
In the 1950s and 1960s he had primary responsibility for setting up an evening program which brought classes to nearly 4,000 persons in five Southwestern Ohio communities and later, for planning, organizing and setting in motion three branch campuses: Miami Middletown in 1966, Miami Hamilton in 1968 and a joint venture by Miami and Ohio State University which went out on its own in 1967 as Wright State University. He retired from Miami University in 1972.

January 20 is Scholarship Blitz DayMiami University Middletown will host a free "Scholarship Blitz" program for potential and current students from 10 - 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20 in RM 142 Campus & Community Center, Johnston Hall.
Sessions will be presented on steps to apply, filing for Federal Student Aid, writing the scholarship essay and other scholarship options.
"Applying for scholarships can seem to be a daunting task, but if you break it down to a step-by-step process it really doesn't take that much time and effort," said Assistant Admissions Director Diane Cantonwine. "In prior years our scholarship awards ranged from $500 to nearly $5,000. If you think of the money that you might be awarded, it's worth doing."

Let it Snow!If the weather outside is frightful, there are several ways to check for closings and cancellations at Miami Middletown.
First, this web site. We will post closings, cancellations and late starts on this web page. Click on "Weather Update" under the News column (far left) for the latest information.
Next, our weather phone line at 727-3477. This phone line lists cancellations by morning, afternoon and evening classes.
Last, listen to radio or television announcements. Of course this applys only to campus-wide closings or postponements, not to individual classes. The radio stations we supply information to include: WMOH(1450), WLW(700), WPFB(910)and WHIO(1290) AM; and WMUB(88.5), WOXY(97) and WPFB(105.9) FM. We also notify most Cincinnati and Dayton television stations.

Curtner Named Student of the MonthCourtney Curtner has been named Miami University Middletown's Student of the Month for October. The sophomore from West Carrollton is in the School of Fine Arts.
Curtner was nominated for the award for her outstanding work with Miami Middletown's Student Government, Kaos student newspaper, and Pandora's Box Classics Club. She was also cited for taking the lead and becoming Miami University Middletown's first Honor student.
Curtner still finds time to tutor and work. "She is the rare student that helps anyone and everyone, yet never tells others," said nominator Starla Evilsizor, MUM Art History Instructor.
The Student of the Month award is given in recognition of students who make a significant contribution to the campus either in or out of the classroom
