MUM Applied Research Center's New Home in Former Bank One Building DowntownThe newest addition to the downtown Middletown landscape is Miami University Middletown's Applied Research Center, which is now occupying 5,800 square feet in the former Bank One Building. The Center, a public policy research group that began at MUM in the early 1980s, provides research services to a wide variety of local, county, and state government entities, non-profit organizations, and business and industry.
Directed by Dr. Robert Seufert of Miami's Sociology Department, the Center employs 15 people on a regular basis, and when engaged in statewide surveying work for such clients as the Ohio Department of Transportation or Ohio Department of Public Safety, that number swells to 40 to 50 people.
This is the same location where more than 200 years ago Stephen Vail, one of Middletown's founders, chose to build his cabin, and over the years that site became the center of downtown Middletown. It was the location of a general store and mercantile operated by William Oglesby and George Barnitz, which in time became Barnitz Bank, and finally Bank One. Perry Thatcher purchased the Bank One building in 2002.
Thatcher is delighted to have the Center located downtown. He noted that "the availability of prime office and operational space, plus high-speed fiber optic connectivity to the internet, continues to make downtown Middletown a great place for businesses to locate."
Bringing the Center downtown was a collaborative effort between the Center, Miami Middletown staff, data and telecommunications experts from Miami's Information Technology Services division, representatives from iFiber, and Thatcher and his assistant Judy Bober.
"Having the space to accommodate our research and data analysis staff, our surveying staff, and all of our research records is a major step forward," Seufert said. "The new location will make it possible for us to work on larger, more complex projects for a greater number of clients."
MUM's Interim Dean Kelly Cowan is pleased with the new downtown location for the Center. "By working to connect the campus to iFiber, we now have a means of establishing and possibly expanding the campus' presence in the downtown Middletown area to serve more people who work and live there."
The Applied Research Center is also serving as a test site for Miami's first use of voice over internet technology, combining internet and telephone access through fiber optics.
The public is invited to an open house from 4-6 pm on Thursday, November 2, to learn more about the operations of the Applied Research Center.

The Cincinnati Klezmer Project to Perform November 3Miami University Middletown's Fantastic Free Fridays will continue its seventh season on Friday, November 3 with a performance at 10 a.m. by the Cincinnati Klezmer Project.
The Cincinnati Klezmer Project features clarinetist Michele Gingras, a member of Miami University's music faculty. Recommended for all ages, the group's roots are in celebratory high-spirited dance tunes, folk songs and liturgical melodies that once flourished in the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe.
Miami Middletown began the Fantastic Free Fridays programs in the fall of 2000, offering free one-hour performances to schools in a five-county area. Since that time, almost 30,000 young people have had the opportunity to experience jazz and big band music, a marching band, theatre, opera, ballet and world music.
A generous donation from the Bever family of Oxford is again helping to support the Fantastic Free Fridays performances.
Fantastic Free Fridays performances are held in Dave Finkelman Auditorium and are open to the public. Groups interested in attending performances should contact Susan Joyce, music faculty member at Miami University Middletown, joyces@muohio.edu, or by voice mail at 727-3415.
