Cincinnati State And Miami Team Up For
Early Childhood Education In Warren CountyCincinnati State Technical and Community College and Miami University's regional campuses have developed an innovative partnership to address the need for trained personnel in childcare education and administration.
Students will be able to complete Cincinnati State Early Childhood Education classes at the Warren County Career Center, leading to the one-year Early Childhood Education certificate, the child development associate credential (CDA), and a leadership certificate. Miami communication, psychology, English, and other courses may be used to complete a portion of the requirements for these certificates.
For ten years Miami has been offering classes at the Warren County Career Center during the academic year, as well as at Lakota West High School. This fall Miami will also be offering courses at the Workforce Academy on Cox Road. Classes are available year-round at Miami Hamilton and Miami Middletown.
Cincinnati State's Early Childhood Care and Education certificate prepares students for entry-level positions in a variety of child care settings, and the Child Development Associate Credential is awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition for early childhood educators who have met national standards. The Leadership Certificate provides state-of-the-art program management techniques in administration as well as personnel and fiscal management, and provides training for directors who have responsibilities for management as well as supervision of the care of children.
Both institutions offer associate degrees in Early Childhood Education, and the institutions are working on articulation agreements so that students may pursue that two-year degree at either institution while maximizing course credits transferred between the institutions.
"This is an excellent example of two institutions combining their efforts to address a key workforce and education need," said Dr. Ron Wright, President of Cincinnati State. "The collaboration ensures that students have access to the courses and educational support systems they need to earn their certificates, and does so in a cost effective manner."
Dr. Michael Governanti, Executive Director at Miami Middletown, cited convenience for students as a key element as the institutions work together. "Miami has a number of course offering time and location options to enable students to enroll in courses convenient to work or home."
While Cincinnati State and Miami have different academic calendars, the institutions plan on coordinating schedules in the months to come as the program progresses.
For information on Cincinnati State's certificate programs, contact Crystal Bossard, Early Childhood Care and Education program chair, at 513-569-4756, or faculty member Sandy Owen, at 513-569-1518.

Mechanical ENT Seniors Win National CompetitionAlthough it amounted to more than 3,000 hours of collective effort over the course of a year, Miami mechanical engineering technology students Jim Bachmann, Vince Breidenbach and Sean Reed each said they would build their basic utility vehicle (BUV) all over again.
Their three-wheeled vehicle was the class of the field in a recent national competition, overtaking BUVs from the University of Cincinnati, University of Dayton, Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis (IUPUI), Marquette University, Northern Illi
nois University, the University of Missouri and others.
The mission of the BUV competition, sponsored by the Institute for Affordable Transportation, is to "harness the creative energy of college students from across the nation in an effort to develop a simple, low-cost utility vehicle that can benefit low-income people in rural areas of developing countries." The specifications included cost, payload, speed, safety and assembly time.
"These three students had the perfect combination of skills needed for a project like this," said Miami Engineering Technology Professor Gary Drigel. "They had the engineering knowledge to design it, plus the hands-on skills like welding and fabricating to actually build it."
"This project used skills that went beyond mechanical engineering," said Bachmann. "We were using information from our Miami classes in group dynamics, technical writing and cultural perspectives to name a few."
"This takes all the math and science and engineering that you've ever learned, and puts it all to use in a practical way,' said Breidenbach. "We had our moments during the year that we worked on this, but overall it was just fun to do."
"The best part of this had to be winning," said Reed, "We didn't just squeak by. There was no question that our vehicle was the best one out there."
The team received a trophy, tickets to the Indianapolis 500 and lots of bragging rights. CH2M Hill in Dayton helped sponsor the project.
