Thunderhawks Seek New Women's Basketball Head Coach

Jim Sliger, director of athletics at Miami University Middletown, has announced that the Thunderhawks are looking for a new head women's basketball coach for the 2005/2006 season.

The coach is responsible for recruiting, organizing, promoting, and administering the women's basketball program at MUM. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree, a minimum of three years coaching experience and a desire to work with college level student athletes. A master's degree and coaching experience at the collegiate level are desired qualifications. The part-time position begins September 15 and continues through March 15.

Persons interested in applying should send a letter, resume, and the names and phone numbers of three professional references to Jim Sliger, Miami University Middletown, 4200 East University Boulevard, Middletown, Ohio, 45042. Review of applications will begin April 11 and continue until the position is filled.

Free Celtic Concert on April 8

Miami University Middletown continues its "Fantastic Free Fridays" program with a performance by Knot Fibb'n on Friday, April 8 at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in Dave Finkelman Auditorium.

Knott Fibb'n is a Columbus-based high energy Celtic folk quartet. They feature innovative modern arrangements of traditional dance tunes, airs and songs. (Listen to samples at www.knotfibbn.com.)

The "Fantastic Free Fridays" series of performances is designed to provide opportunities for schools, area seniors and Miami Middletown students to enjoy a wide variety of performances during the week.

All Fantastic Free Fridays events are free and open to the public.

A generous donation from the Bever family of Oxford is helping to support the Fantastic Free Fridays performances this year.

Community Appreciation Day Set for April 23

Performances by area high school music ensembles and "Classes Without Quizzes" from faculty and staff will highlight Miami Middletown's first Community Appreciation Day on Saturday, April 23 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Musical groups scheduled to perform that day include the Edgewoood Choraliers, Madison Steel Band, Middletown Purple Pizzazz Show Choir, Fenwick Jazz Band, Dream Team Drill Team and Miami University Steel Band.

"Classes Without Quizzes" will include "Personal Finance 101: Is your Financial House in Order?" with Chris Metcalf; "Spiders, Spiders Everywhere" with Dr. Alan Cady; "Miami University Since WWII" and "All That Jazz" with Rod Nimtz; "Fun with CAD" (computer assisted design) for students in grades 6-8 with Dr. Vipul Ranatunga, "The Ancient LEGOs of Stonehenge" with Starla Alexander and Sue Rogers and a "Know Your Ohio Trees" walking tour with Dr. Carolyn Keiffer.

Kids in College sessions include "Creations in Clay" (K-6), "Art from Around the World" (grades 5-6) and "You & Me & Junie B." (grades 1-2). Exercise samplers for adults are scheduled, featuring basic, join-in sessions in Body Recall, tai chi and yoga.

Various organizations will have booths at the event, including MUM Alumni, the Early Childhood Center, Kids in College, Gardner-Harvey Library, the City of Middletown and Miami RedHawk football. Free Earth Day seedlings will be given to the first 100 families by the Miami Middletown Botany Club. Free health screenings, including glucose/cholesterol and blood pressure, will be provided by Miami Middletown's student nurses in partnership with Middletown Regional Hospital.

There will also be drawings for free tickets to the Rhonda Vincent concert, which will be held at 8 pm on April 23 at Dave Finkelman Auditorium.

"We wanted to showcase our beautiful campus, engaging faculty and talented local students," said Jan Toennisson, Miami Middletown Director of Public Affairs. "We hope that there will be something for everyone at Community Appreciation Day and that everyone will stop by for an hour or spend the day."

Pizza from the LaRosa's Restaurant on Roosevelt Blvd. will be available for purchase on campus that day.

Apply for Summer Classes Now

Miami University Middletown is currently accepting applications for summer classes. The four summer sessions last five-six weeks and begin on May 16, June 13, June 27 and July 18.

Summer classes are a good choice for college students who will be home for the summer and want to lessen their load for the fall term or new students who want to get a jump start on college. Students who are enrolled at another college complete the Transient Student Application which can be printed from Miami Middletown's admission web page.

Gary Wheeler Named President of Gogebic Community College

The Board of Trustees of Gogebic Community College has announced the appointment of Gary S. Wheeler as President beginning July 1. Wheeler, a professor at Miami University Middletown, will be retiring from Miami to assume that position.

Wheeler joined Miami University in 1976 as an assistant professor of art and was promoted to associate professor and then to full professor. He has since held positions including coordinator for English, humanities and fine arts; acting director of student affairs and associate executive director for academic affairs.

Wheeler received a B.F.A. from the University of Connecticut and an M.F.A. from Arizona State University.

Located in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Gogebic Community College was founded in 1932 and now serves more than 1,400 students.

Transfer Fair Set for March 23

Representatives from more than 25 area colleges and universities will be at Miami University Middletown's Transfer Fair on Wednesday, March 23 to provide information and answer questions about their programs. The Transfer Fair will be held in Johnston Hall from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and will also provide information on relocation to Miami's Oxford Campus.

"The Transfer Fair is a good resource for former, current and even future students," said Miami Middletown Transfer Advisor Mike Hieber. "Will my credits transfer? What can I do with the classes I have taken? Where can I find the courses or major I'm looking for? You could get answers to all of those questions and more at the Transfer Fair in a quick, convenient way."

Institutions attending include: Antioch College, Ball State, Central State, Cincinnati State, College of Mt. St. Joseph, Eastern Kentucky, Franklin University, Indiana University East, Thomas More, University of Cincinnati, University of Dayton, Wilmington College, Wright State University, Xavier University and more.

Final Post-Secondary Enrollment Meeting Scheduled

Miami University Middletown participates in the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Program (PSEO) which allows eligible high school students to attend college during the regular academic year.

The final regional PSEO information meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 12 at Miami Middletown's Johnston Hall.

The program will include an overview of Ohio's Post-Secondary Program, the pros and cons of participation in the program, the expectations of the colleges and universities and admission criteria for the area's participating colleges and universities.

Symphonic Band Spring Concert on March 6

The Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band will perform its annual free spring concert at Miami University Middletown on Sunday, March 6 at 3:00 p.m. in the Dave Finkelman Auditorium.

The band, directed by Chris Brandenburg, will play "Stars and Bars" by Robert Jager, "Malaguena" by Ernesto Lecuona, "LaGazza Ladra" by Rossini and "Concerto for Band" by Fritz Velke. This year's concert theme is "Music From America to Italy."

Guest conductor will be Emily Power, currently band and orchestra director in the Northwest Local Schools. She is a graduate of Lakota West High School and Miami University. She will direct the Robert Russell Bennett work, "Suite of Old American Dances".

Guest soloist is Sandy Seefeld, Professor of Flute at Miami University. Seefeld will play two movements of the Mozart "Flute Concerto No.2." Seefeld has been professor at Miami University for 28 years.

The Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band is in its thirty-seventh year and currently features approximately 90 musicians. William Stiehl, Coordinator of Fine Arts for the Middletown City School District, started the band in 1967.

This is the twentieth year for director Chris Brandenburg who also serves as band director at Lakota West High School and as Coordinator of the Lakota District Instrumental Music.

This event is free and open to the public.

Raise Gospel Choir to Perform on March 11

Miami Middletown continues its "Fantastic Free Fridays" program with a performance by the Raise Gospel Choir on Friday, March 11 at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in Dave Finkelman Auditorium.

Columbus, Ohio's Raise Choir, under the direction of Dr. Raymond Wise, will perform a varied repertoire of music including spirituals, choral music, hymns and traditional and contemporary gospel music. Since 1986, Raise Choir has performed extensively throughout the United States and in Germany, Austria and Portugal. Over the years, the various members of Raise Choir have performed background vocals for numerous national recording artists and appeared in touring gospel musical productions.

The "Fantastic Free Fridays" series of performances is designed to provide opportunities for schools, area seniors and Miami Middletown students to enjoy a wide variety of performances during the week.

All Fantastic Free Fridays events are free and open to the public.
