Miami's Regional Campuses Offering In-State Tuition To Indiana Neighbors

Miami University's Hamilton and Middletown regional campuses have joined with other Ohio institutions in offering in-state tuition rates to Indiana residents who live along the Indiana-Ohio border.

The tuition reciprocity arrangement was coordinated between the Ohio Board of Regents and the Indiana Commission on Higher Education. Other area institutions joining with Miami Hamilton and Miami Middletown in this program include Clark State Community College, Sinclair Community College and Wright State University at both its Dayton and Lake Campuses.

In-state tuition is being made available to Indiana residents who live in Adams, Blackford, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Henry, Jay, Randolph, Rush, Union, Wayne and Wells counties.

The goal of the tuition reciprocity agreement, according to the Ohio Board of Regents, is "to increase availability of programs to residents of Western Ohio and Eastern Indiana without needless duplication of educational effort and to promote efficient use of existing educational facilities and resources."

Miami's regional campuses, eligible Indiana students must register as regional campus students, and be taking courses offered at or through the regional campuses. The tuition reciprocity agreement does not include Oxford campus students or Oxford courses.

Some Indiana students now take classes on both regional campuses, while others enroll for courses offered by Miami's regional campuses in Eaton.

This fall Miami's regional campuses will begin their tenth year of offering courses in Eaton. Persons interested in learning more about this program are invited to contact the Admission Office at Miami University Hamilton (513-7953111) or at Miami University Middletown (513-727-3216 or toll free 1-86-MIAMI-MID).

New Partnership Offers Online Bachelor's Degree Option

Students at Miami University's Regional Campuses now have more options completing their degree thanks to a new educational partnership with Columbus, Ohio based Franklin University. The agreement offers students the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree by combining on-campus courses at Miami's Regional Campuses with online courses through Franklin .

First students earn their associate's degree from one of Miami's Regional Campuses. Students then complete "bridge" courses at the Middletown or Hamilton branches while simultaneously taking online classes through Franklin University to complete their bachelor's degree. Through this online program, students will travel less by staying in their hometown and completing classes online. The completion program offers classes in 3-, 6-, 12- and 15-week formats, which allows students to choose a start date that best coincides with their schedule.

Majors are offered in 10 fields: Accounting, Applied Management, Business Administration, Computer Science, Digital Communication, Health Care Management, Information Technology, Management, Management Information Sciences and Public Safety Management. Franklin University also offers an innovative 17-month MBA online.

Adults have responded enthusiastically to the convenient online format and the ability to fit classes into their daily schedule. Students also have the benefit of belonging to two schools at one time. They can access Franklin's virtual resources in addition to the services of Miami's Regional Campuses. Franklin's resources include academic advising, a help desk and a library system. Each student also is assigned a Student Services Associate who provides support and guidance by answering questions about transcripts, financial aid or even how to purchase textbooks.

On Monday, July 19, Franklin University Regional Director Bob Morris will be at Miami Middletown in Johnston Hallway from 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. to discuss the new program with Miami Middletown students. Applications Ahead of Last Year

Applications for fall admission at Miami University Middletown are running ahead of last year according to campus officials. "Since April our applications have been running 8 to 12 percent ahead of last year," said Mary Lu Flynn, director of enrollment services, "Historically, July has been the month we've received the greatest number." As of July 1 a total of 896 applications have been processed, compared to 832 a year ago. By the time classes began last August the campus had received 1,165 applications. A little over 10 percent of the applications for this fall have been from multicultural students, and approximately 25 percent have been from students interested in the campus' associate degree programs. Butler County residents account for half of the applications, while another 27 percent are Warren County residents. While the majority of applications are from students ages 18 to 21, a quarter of the applications are from persons 22 and older. In addition to the growing awareness of the importance of higher education for future personal success, accessibility and affordability are cited by the campus as factors in the increased number of applications. "Our open admission policy, combined with offering classes off-campus in Butler, Preble, and Warren Counties, helps to ensure accessibility," noted Michael Governanti, executive director.

Miami Middletown and Miami Hamilton have been offering courses at off site locations for nine years. This fall Miami Middletown is broadening its course offerings in Lebanon, working with Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and Sinclair Community College to enhance higher education opportunities for Warren County residents.

"In terms of affordability," Governanti continued, "this coming year, for the second year in a row, Miami's regional campuses will have the lowest annual fees of all of Ohio's regional campuses."

Fall classes at Miami Middletown begin on August 24. Information on academic programs, courses, admission, and financial assistance is available on the campus' website, www.mid.muohio.edu. Information is available and campus visits can be arranged by calling 727-3216 or 1-86-MIAMI-MID toll free.
