Continuing Education Offers Summer ACT Prep Class

Students can prepare for the upcoming October ACT test this summer. "Preparing for the ACT" is a 14-hour course packed with studying tips, test taking strategies, and a general review of the four areas covered on the exam - English, reading, math and science. ACT classes will be held from 9:00 am - 12:30 pm on August 3, 5, 10 and 12.

Also, on Friday, August 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. students attending the ACT Prep class will have the opportunity to participate in a free essay writing workshop. Students will learn critical skills to write a polished college entrance or financial aid essay that will enhance their college application.

Area Students Awarded Gardner Tech Prep Scholarships

Six area students have been awarded Gardner Tech Prep Scholarships for the 2004-05 academic year at Miami University Middletown. The merit-based scholarships are awarded to graduates of a high school tech prep curriculum.

Shanee Collins of Lakota East High School received $2,000 and will major in nursing. Nicholas Kamphous of Fairfield High School was awarded $3,500 and will major in Computer Science and Systems Analysis. Adam Magee of Middletown High School received $2,000 and will major in Computer Technology. Nicholas Marcum of Lemon-Monroe High School was awarded $2,500 and will major in Mechanical Engineering Technology. Casey Snowden of Lemon Monroe High School received $2,000 and will major in Mechanical Engineering Technology. Jason Williamson of Wm. Mason High School was awarded $3,000 and will major in Mechanical Engineering Technology.

Next Kids-in-College Session Begins July 12

Miami Middletown is conducting summer enrichment programs for children who will be entering grades 1-9 in the fall. These interactive, creative programs highlight science, art, reading, computers, fitness and more!

The second session of classes is due to begin the week of July 12. Prices range from $45-$175. The following classes still have openings:

•… You and Me and Junie B, (grades 1-2), $69

•… A Seed is a Promise, (grades 1-2), $69

•… Mirror, Mirror . .. . Looking Past Reflections, (art for grades 5-6), $69

•… Computer Busters, (grades 7-9), 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., $175

•… Kick-it-Up with Tae Kwon Do, (grades 5-9), 9:30-11:00 a.m. $45

Scholar Incentive Recipients Named

Thirteen students entering Miami University Middletown have been awarded Gardner Scholar Incentive Scholarships of $1,150 for the 2004-05 academic year. The students had the highest grade point average of those who applied to Miami University Middletown from their respective high schools.

The recipients are: Sarah Lewis of Middletown High School; Miranda Smith of Madison High School; Travis Burtrum of Bishop Fenwick High School; Amanda Campbell of Lemon Monroe High School; Dustin Turner of Carlisle High School; Callie Cook of Franklin High School; Sarah Binns of Edgewood High School; Matthew Buttram of Wm. Mason High School; Kelsea Downs of Preble Shawnee High School; Kristen Little of Lebanon High School; Norman Miller of Springboro High School; Andrew Chmielswski of Lakota West High School; and Allison Bennett of Lakota East High School.

Register Now for Summer Session III

Registration is underway for Summer Session III, a six-week term that begins June 28 and ends August 6 at Miami University Middletown. Courses offered during this term include Art history, Botany, Business Technology, Communication, English, Geology, History (American and world history), Mathematics (calculus), Psychology, Physics, Spanish, Sociology, Theatre and Zoology.

Summer Session IV, a five week summer term, will begin July 19 and run through August 20. Summer session course information is available on the campus web site at www.mid.muohio.edu or by calling the campus at 727-3200 (1-86-MIAMI-MID toll free).

DeAnna Pretty-Jones Named 2004 Darbyshire Award Recipient

Miami Middletown Sophomore DeAnna Pretty-Jones has been named the recipient of the W. Lynn Darbyshire Award for 2003-2004. The Darbyshire award is given to students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in a student organization, student advisory council, student employment, community service or campus committee assignment.

Pretty-Jones, an English literature major, is active as a member of student government, in community theater and as a United Way volunteer. As President of Faces and Cultures of Every Student (FACES), a multi-cultural student organization, she planned a community/campus poetry night, collaborating with students, faculty, staff, community members, local artists and the campus' literary magazine. She also was a recipient of the 2004 Miami Student Service Leadership Award. She is the daughter of Archie and Elaine Pretty of Middletown.

Julie Routson, Bennett Horton Receive Bennett Award

Miami Middletown student athletes Julie Routson and Bennett Horton have been named the recipients of the 2004 C. Eugene Bennett Award for Miami University Middletown.

Julie Routson is a sophomore majoring in physical education. She is member of the MUM women's softball and basketball teams and is from Monroe.

Bennett Horton is a junior from West Chester. He is a member of the MUM baseball team.

The C. Eugene Bennett Award was established in 1985 in honor of Dr. C. Eugene Bennett, Miami University Middletown's first executive director (1965-1986), in recognition of his emphasis on scholarship and his strong support of the Middletown campus athletic program. This award is presented annually to the male and female student athletes with the highest grade point average for the academic year.
