Wright Brothers 1902 Glider and Displays Coming to Miami Middletown May 15

A piece of regional and world history will be on display at Miami University Middletown when the Wright Brothers Aeroplane Company brings its display of flying machines and Wright brothers artifacts to the Bennett Recreation Center.

The display will be open to public viewing from 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday, May 15th in the Bennett Recreation Center on the campus. Representatives from the Wright Brothers Aeroplane Company will be on hand to answer questions and lead demonstrations. There is no admission charge.

The Wright Brothers Aeroplane Company is an educational foundation made up of aviators, historians, teachers, and others who share an interest in the invention of the airplane. The "Secret of Flight" program is a unique, portable experience in science and history developed by the foundation for traveling as a portable museum.

A full-size 1902 Wright Glider is the centerpiece of the display. This was the first airplane with 3-axis control (roll, pitch, and yaw) and was the basis of the Wright's grandfather patent. Also included are two flight simulators, the wind tunnel used by the Wright brothers to test their theories and designs, a Victorian-era printing press like the one the Wright brothers used to produce their newspaper West Side News that they published in 1890 and 1891. There will also be a timeline kiosk that outlines the work of the Wright Brothers and the development of manned flight.

Aviation archaeologist Nick Engler, who is the director of the project, will be on hand to share the story of how two ordinary brothers from Dayton, through courage, imagination, and perseverance, did something extraordinary at the turn of the 20th century.

The Wright Brothers Aeorplane Company is based at the Dayton International Airport in Hangar 6 on Wright Road, where they continue to work on producing and flying authentic replicas of Wright airplanes.

To learn more, visit www.wright-brothers.org on-line. The web site offers timelines, biographical information about the Wright Brothers, and an on-line virtual museum.
