The Middletown students sold more than 2,000 roses on Valentine's Day to raise most of their donation.

"This is a way for our club to give back to the community and support our troops," said Lauren Zuschlag, a sophomore business major from Maineville and coordinator of the fundraiser.

The phone cards will be given to representatives from the Ohio National Guard who will get them to soldiers from the region who are stationed overseas.

Operation Leap Frog was organized by the Ladies' Auxiliary of VFW Post 7596 in Franklin. The donation made by the Miami Middletown students is the largest single donation made to the program to date. For more information on Operation Leap Frog call the VFW Post at (937) 746-7786.

Nimtz's Work to be Featured in Venice and the Vatican

When the A Cappella Choir of Manchester College (IN) sets off on its spring break concert tour to Italy, a work by Rod Nimtz, assistant executive director at Miami Middletown, will be a featured part of their performances.

The Questions Asked was written and composed by Nimtz for an Oxford choral peace festival in October 1987 in memory of Eldon Hill. The work, which was written for adult choir and child soloist, was published by Mark Foster Music, and is now carried by Shawnee Press.

Dr. Debra Lynn, director of choral organizations at Manchester College, reached Nimtz by e-mail to confirm some biographical information for the tour program.

"We've actually had your piece in our repertoire for some time now," she wrote Nimtz. "We keep bringing it back because we love it and so do our audiences. We are a very peace-conscious campus here at Manchester. We even have a degree in Peace Studies. So your text is quite compelling and appropriate for many events connected with the college."

During the tour, Nimtz's work will be part of liturgies and concerts at such historic places as St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, at the Cathedral Di Palestrina in Rome, and at the Throne Altar of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.

"I was greatly surprised by the e-mail," Nimtz said. "The piece was premiered on October 4, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, so having the piece performed as part of the a concert at the Basilica that bears his name is a great honor."

Manchester College is an independent, liberal arts college associated with the Church of the Brethren located in North Manchester, Indiana, with approximately 1,140 students. Dr. Lynn is an assistant professor of music and director of the choral program at Manchester College, which includes the A Cappella Choir, Chamber Singers, and Manchester Choral Society.
