2003 Ad Campaign Debuts

Miami Middletown's 2003 Fall Ad Campaign has debuted on area TV and radio stations and in many local newspapers.

The radio and TV commercials, using the new "Start Here. Go Anywhere." theme, feature testimonials from Miami Middletown students.

Cincinnati and Dayton radio stations running the commercials include B-105, Q102, 97.3 New Rock, 102.9 WDHT, and 92.1 WROU. Television stations include MTV, BET, ESPN2, Lifetime Movies and Nick on Time Warner Cable in Cincinnati and Dayton. These commercials will run until August 17. Commercials will also run on WB64 and WB26 from July 7 until August 25.

Print ads will appear in the Cincinnati Enquirer, Eaton Register Herald, Dayton Daily News, Middletown Journal, Monroe Times, Mason Pulse Journal, Lebanon Western Star, Franklin Chronicle, Springboro Star Press, Miamisburg News and Germantown Press.

Peabody Scholarships Awarded

Eleven students from Miami University Middletown received a total of $16,800 in Peabody Scholarships for the 2003-04 academic year. The recipients are: Jennifer Howell, Lisa McGuire, Keia Muehl, Angela Polachek and Tammy Turner of Middletown; Sherry Babb and Michele Martin of Trenton; Brandon Markley of Monroe; and Kristy Combs of Germantown. This scholarship is awarded by the Western College Alumnae Association.

Brown-Wright Named Scholar in Residence

Flonzie Brown-Wright will be the Student Affairs Scholar in Residence for the upcoming academic year at Miami University Middletown.

A native of Farmhaven, Miss., Brown-Wright received a Fain Fellowship and attended Tougaloo College and Millsaps College in Mississippi. She served at Millsaps College as Vice-President of the Institute of Politics. She is a recipient of an honorary degree, the Doctor of Humane Letters from LaMoyne College in Syracuse, New York.

She became involved in the civil rights movement in 1963, just after the assassination of Medgar Evers, field secretary for the Mississippi NAACP. Since then she has continued her participation in many creative community initiatives across the country.

Her appointment to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Community (EEOC), as an investigator was confirmed in 1974. She retired from the EEOC in 1989 with special citations, including the Chairman's Award.

She wrote and published her first book, Looking Back to Move Ahead, in 1994. This book chronicles her growing up years in a small rural Mississippi town. It also focuses on the involvement of scores of unrecognized individuals who were similarly involved in the civil rights movement in l960s and 1970s Mississippi. She knew and worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and many other humanitarian activists. She is the recipient of more than 400 Community Service Awards, is listed in "Who's Who Among Black Americans" and is a member of the National Association of Female Executives.

She is president and CEO of FBW & Associates, Inc. of Germantown, Ohio and is founder of The Flonzie B. Wright Scholarship Fund, a fund designed to encourage students to stay in school.

In her role as Student Affairs Scholar in Residence, she will give classroom lectures, meet with student organizations and conduct workshops.

Prier Named Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs

Darius Prier has been named Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs at Miami University Middletown, effective July 1. Prier joined the campus in 2001 as Assistant Director of Admission and Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs.

In his new position he will serve as the chief resource and advocate for students of color including African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans and other related groups.

Prier received a B.A. in political science and M.A. in public administration from Wright State University. He is a member of Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society, Pi Alpha Alpha National Honor Society for Public Affairs and Administration and was recently named Miami Middletown's Advisor of the Year. In 2002 he initiated the Future Leaders of America Transitions program for talented minority high school students interested in college.

Cowan Named Associate Executive Director

Dr. Marjorie M. Cowan has been appointed Associate Executive Director for Academic Affairs at Miami University Middletown effective July 1, 2003.

She received a doctorate from the University of Louisville, where she applied physicochemical methodologies to describe the adhesion of bacteria to human tissues. She studied environmental bacterial adhesion during a postdoctoral position at the Center of Marine Biotechnology in Baltimore and continued her physicochemical research as a research associate at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. She joined Miami Middletown in 1993 and was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of microbiology in 2000.

She is the author of numerous articles on bacterial adhesion mechanisms and has given research presentations in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, Israel and Romania. She is the co-holder of two patents on antiadhesive approaches to fighting microbial infection. She recently worked with AK Steel in the development of their new anti-microbial steel. She won a Celebration of Teaching Award from the Greater Cincinnati Consortium of Colleges and Universities and is the author of a textbook of case studies in microbiology.

In her new position, Dr. Cowan will provide leadership for curriculum and instructional development at Miami Middletown and serve as liaison to department chairs and academic coordinators.

Public Invited to Campus Visit on June 25

Area residents of all ages are encouraged to visit Miami University Middletown on Wednesday, June 25 when the campus will host its summer campus visit program beginning at 6 p.m.

Two programs will be presented during this event, one for recent high school graduates and rising seniors and one for adults who are interested in continuing their education. There will also be a special session for the parents of first-time college students. The program will include sessions on financial aid, the application process, academic programs, student life and services.
