Health Alliance Renews Nursing Education Agreement

Miami University and The Health Alliance have renewed a nursing education agreement that will continue a partnership aimed at producing qualified individuals to the health care industry, which is currently battling a nursing shortage.

The initial partnership was formed to increase enrollment and retention of nursing students at the Miami University Hamilton and Middletown campuses.

"The partnership has been a great success in that we have already accomplished our initial goals and want to continue," said Eugenia Mills, Director of the Miami University Nursing Department. "In just one year, we increased the number of graduates in our Associate Degree program by 26 percent.

"We have been very pleased with the results of our partnership with Miami University," says Geri Harrison, human resources director at the Health Alliance. "This opportunity has allowed us to increase the number of nurses caring for local patients."

The partnership provides for tuition award opportunities, the support of a faculty/counselor position, and a mentoring program. According to Mills, the faculty/counselor position has been a huge asset to the nursing program.

Mills said that during the last year, the faculty/counselor worked with students, not necessarily on the actual course work, but on issues like time management and study skills. "We found that these issues were threatening the success of some of our students who juggle school, work and family."

"We are grateful to the Health Alliance for this partnership," she added. 'This is truly a win-win situation for us and the Health Alliance. Not only does this partnership provide for scholarship and the faculty/counselor position, but it also provides more nurses for the industry still experiencing a shortage of employees."

Twenty nursing students are eligible to receive a $3,000 tuition benefit award. Students may apply for tuition benefit after they complete their first clinical rotation in the nursing program. Tuition benefit recipients will agree to work for 18 months for the Health Alliance.

The Health Alliance is an integrated health care delivery system, which includes The Christ Hospital, The University Hospital, The St. Luke Hospitals, The Jewish Hospital, The Fort Hamilton Hospital and the physicians of Alliance Primary Care.

Three MUM Students Receive Miami Service Award

Miami University President Dr. James Garland (second from left), greets Miami Middletown's President's Distinguished Service Award Winners Leslie Ford, Jennifer Keith and Charla Davison.

Three Miami Middletown students were the recipients of the President's Distinguished Service Award, presented in Oxford last month. Charla Davison, Leslie Ford and Jennifer Keith all received the prestigious award, given to those students whose service to the university has been extraordinary. Only 27 students from all of Miami's campuses received the award.

Charla Davison, a speech communication major from Clayton Ohio, received the President's Distinguished Service Award for her dedication to supporting campus pride, student activism, and cultural diversity at the Middletown campus. When the Middletown Athletic Department could not find an appropriate Thunderhawk mascot costume, Davison designed and created one for them. Her activities include the campus dance team, secretary of Miami Middletown Student Government, philosophy tutor and volunteer with CIVIC, an outreach-oriented committee on campus. As an active member in Faces and Cultures of Every Student (FACES), a multi-cultural student organization, she developed a communication system that effectively kept students informed of current and new projects.

Leslie Ford, a microbiology major from Middletown, was awarded the President's Distinguished Service Award for her superior contributions in the classroom as well as her exceptional service to campus life at the Middletown campus. In the words of her nominator, she "facilitates communication between the professor and the student . . .and is willing to model ideal student behavior in the classroom. More profoundly, she has helped her colleagues to see that the issues discussed in the classroom are neither isolated nor merely theoretical but concern the very fabric of the students' own lives." She serves the campus community through her position as treasurer of student government where she continues to empower students to initiate funding and programs. She is the mother of four children, aged 15, 13, 11, and 9.

Jennifer Keith, an English/creative writing major from Middletown, received the President's Distinguished Service Award for her efforts to make Miami Middletown a more exciting place and the encouragement she has provided to other students. She has been a supporter for campus government, promoter of student involvement and an active participant in leadership programs while at the Miami University Middletown. She has been actively involved in student organizations that strive to inform and entertain students. She was the editor-in-chief of KAOS, the campus newspaper, a DJ at WMUM campus radio station, and a judge for Illuminati, a campus literary magazine.
