Thirteen Area High Schools Will Compete at Tech Challenge 2003

Tech Challenge 2003 will be held at Miami University Middletown on April 4 and will feature a repeat of last year's popular LEGO Mindstorms robotics contest, as well as contests in multimedia, video production and three levels of competition in web design.

The LEGO Mindstorms robotics contest this year is an obstacle course complete with up ramps, down ramps and walls to maneuver around. See the contest live on the web at Tech Challenge 2003-Live Webcast

High Schools represented at this year's Tech Challenge include: Butler Tech, Carlisle, Fenwick, Franklin, Hamilton, Kings, Lakota East, Lakota West, Mason, Middletown, Monroe, Princeton, Springboro, Sycamore and the Warren County Career Center.

Glee Club to Present Free Concert on March 28

The Miami University Middletown Artist and Lecture Series continues its "Fantastic Free Fridays" program with a performance by the Miami Men's Glee Club on Friday, March 28 at 10 a.m. in Dave Finkelman Auditorium.

The Miami University Men's Glee Club is an ensemble of more than 80 men (students and faculty) selected by an annual audition process each fall. Founded in 1907, it is among the oldest and largest such ensembles in the nation. They have toured nationally and internationally throughout their history, and appeared last year at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. as part of the Center's Millennium Series.

The "Fantastic Free Fridays" series of performances is designed to provide opportunities for schools, area seniors and Miami Middletown students to enjoy a wide variety of performances during the week.

Student Dinner to Benefit Ethiopian Women's Hospital

Students in Miami Middletown's Service Learning class, along with students and staff from Africa, will sponsor an authentic African dinner at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26 in Verity Lodge. This dinner will raise funds for a Women's Hospital in Ethiopia. The founders of this hospital are Nobel Peace Prize nominees.

This dinner is an excellent opportunity to learn about Ethiopia and its cultural traditions, music and current humanitarian efforts. There will be a free-will offering at the dinner.

Featured dishes will include Yemarina Yewotet Dabo (honey bread) from Ethiopia, Jollof Rice from Nigeria, Mafe (ground nut stew) from Sierra Leone and Camarao o Laurentina from Mozambique.

Campus Visit Set For March 29

Area residents of all ages are encouraged to visit Miami University Middletown on Saturday, March 29 when the campus hosts a campus visit program beginning at 9 a.m.

Scheduled for Johnston Hall, the program will include sessions on financial aid, the application process, academic programs, student life and services. There will also be special sessions for parents and for adults interested in beginning or completing their university education.

"The purpose of the campus visit program at Miami Middletown is to give potential students and members of our area communities an opportunity to see the campus and learn about the academic possibilities offered here," said Mary Lu Flynn, director of enrollment services. "We are a campus well-suited to meeting the educational needs of recent high school graduates as well as the working adult."

Post-Secondary Enrollment Meeting Scheduled At MUM

Miami University Middletown participates in the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program which allows eligible high school students to attend college during the regular academic year.

Miami Middletown admission counselors will conduct an information program on Ohio's PSEO at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 22 in Johnston Hall at Miami Middletown.

The program will cover the history of Ohio's Post-Secondary Program, the pros and cons of the program, the expectations of the colleges and universities and admission criteria for the participating colleges and universities in the area.

Miami Middletown Sponsoring Pettiford-Wates Visit

Miami University Middletown will sponsor a week-long residency with Tawyna Pettiford-Wates, director of the drama department at Seattle State Community College, as part of the campus' celebration of women's history month.

Dr. Pettiford-Wates will be speaking to classes on the campus as well as visiting one of Miami Middletown's partner schools, Middletown High Schools.

She will present two public programs during her residency. "For Colored Girls.../Nappy Edges" is scheduled on Monday, March 24, at 1:30 p.m. On Wednesday, March 26 she will present "Race and Gender: A Question of Integrity (Anita Hill, Clarence Thomas and the Women's Movement)" at 1:30 p.m. Both programs are in Johnston Hall are free of charge.

Dr. Pettiford-Wates has enjoyed lecturing at various universities, colleges and community forums around the country and in Africa. She received numerous honors and recognition as an educator and innovator including The Dan Evans Award for Outstanding Faculty and The Charles Kane Award for Innovation in honor of the pioneering project "uncle tom deconstructed."

As a creative artist, Tawnya Pettiford-Wates has been awarded the Langston Hughes Cultural Arts Award for her contributions to the arts in her community. She has been recognized by the Seattle Weekly's BEST OF SEATTLE AWARDS as one of Seattle's "Most Respected Artists" and her one woman show "Nappy Edges" was recognized as one of the "Most Outstanding" original single performance pieces.

She has performed on stage throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, including on her Broadway debut in Ntozake Shange's groundbreaking choreopoem "For Colored Girls..." Dr. Pettiford-Wates has produced and performed at the Seattle Rep, A.C.T., The Group Theatre, Intiman and The Empty Space theaters in Seattle. Her film credits include "Sleepless in Seattle", "Twin Peaks", "Twice in a Lifetime" and "Crazy in Love." She has appeared in a number of television shows and commercials including "Under One Roof" and most recently the CBS re-make of The Fugitive.

She has been working as the director and artistic conceptualist for The Conciliation Project, a company that is committed to fostering dialogue about race and racism in America. Dr. Pettiford-Wates is a playwright, director, actor, poet, teacher, writer, wife and mother of three children. She most recently directed a production of Ntozake Shange's "for colored girls who've considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf", the critically acclaimed production of August Wilson's "Two Trains Running," Herb Gardner's "I'm Not Rappaport" as well as "A Free Country," by Stephen Most.
