Womens Read-In to Feature Luisa Lang Owen
Luisa Lang Owen will be a special guest at Miami Middletowns HerStory Read-In on Wednesday, March 5, 12:30 - 2 p.m. in the Johnston Hall Balcony Lounge.
Lang Owen was only nine years old in 1945 when she entered a concentration camp in her native Yugoslavia. She survived the persecution of the Danube Swabians, came to America and is now professor emerita of art education at Wright State University in Dayton.
Her life story, published this year as Casualty of War, A Childhood Remembered, is a haunting witness to a massive crime that was conveniently forgotten. The problem was not just that they did not want us to have or to be, writes Dr. Lang. They wanted us not to have been.
The theme of this years read-in is Womens Memoirs. All are welcome to share a passage from their favorite womens memoir
or book.

Richard Rodriguez To Present Casper Lecture March 27
Richard Rodriguez, author and essayist on PBSs The New Hour With Jim Lehrer, will present the Alex and Lena Casper Memorial Lecture at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, in the Dave Finkelman Auditorium at Miami University Middletown.
Rodriguez was born in San Francisco and raised in Sacramento where he attended Roman Catholic grammar school and high school. After graduating Stanford University, he spent two years in a religious studies program at Columbia University, was a fellow at the Warburg Institute in London, and obtained his doctorate in Renaissance literature from the University of California at Berkley.
Rodriguez is an editor with the Pacific News Service in San Francisco, as well as a contributing editor for Harper's Magazine, U.S. News and World Report and the Sunday Opinion Page of The Los Angeles Times. Rodriguez has produced two documentaries for the BBC, and was the subject of a two-part profile on Bill Moyer's "World of Ideas" television program. His articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The American Scholar, Time, Mother Jones and The New Republic.
Rodriguez has written three books. First published was Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez, which won several awards, including the Gold Medal for non-fiction from the Commonwealth Club of California, the Christopher Prize for Autobiography and the Ansfeld-Wolf Prize for Civil Rights from the Cleveland Foundation. That was followed by Days of Obligation: An Argument with My Mexican Father (one of three finalists for the 1993 Pulitzer Prize in the non-fiction category), and most recently Brown: The Last Discovery of America.
Most Americans recognize Rodriguez from his television essays on the Public Television program The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. His essays, at the end of the hour, have been broadcast for ten years. In that time, his television pieces on our American life have been honored with a range of citations.
His awards include an Emmy Award for Short Historical Essay for his piece "Pearl Harbor Anniversary" (1992); the Frankel Medal for the National Endowment for the Humanities (1992); the International Journalism Award from the World Affairs Council of California (1990); a National Endowment for the Humanities (1976) and a Fulbright Fellowship.
The Casper Lectures were endowed by the late Isidor Casper, a 1932 graduate of Miami University and prominent Middletown attorney. Past Casper lecturers have included Nobel prize recipients Oscar Arias and Linus Pauling, former British Prime Minister Sir Harold Wilson, former Secretary of State Edmund Muskie, and journalists Daniel Schorr and Robert Novak.

Computer Security Class To Begin March 1No one can argue that information security is not a hot topic right now among frontline IT technicians and network environment managers. Companies of all sizes are concerned about Homeland Security issues and the protection of their vital data.
With this in mind, Miami Middletown is offering a class called Security+, beginning on March 1 and running for eight Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m.
The CompTIA curriculum is a vendor-neutral certification program that is internationally recognized as the benchmark for foundation-level security professionals. Security+ was developed with input from industry, government, academia and front-line practitioners so you can be assured of its relevance. Class structure includes both lecture and hands-on exercises so you are prepared to take the certification exam.
Instructors for the class are Karl Flem and Bill Franer, MCSE Certified and Military Security Experts. The cost of the class is $899.

Momma Kemba Brings Fannie Lou Hamer to CampusMiami Middletowns black history celebration continues with a performance by Momma Kemba at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 3 in Johnston Halls Hawk Haven.
Momma Kembas performances keep the spirit of strong black women in American history alive through dramatic storytelling and song. At Miami Middletown she will be doing a performance portrayal in full costume of Fannie Lou Hamer, an African-American woman who played an integral role in bringing about the Voting Rights Act signed by Lyndon Johnson in 1965. Her performances have been described as spiritual, riveting, dynamic and fine-tuned.
This performance is free and open to the public. There will be a question and answer period following the performance.

Sorg Opera Has Miami Middletown Connection
Winter doldrums got you down?
Then you might want to consider attending this weekend's Sorg Opera performance of Ariadne Auf Naxos, a "wild" Strauss opera that is "humorous and touching with a lush musical score." An added attraction will be Miami Middletown's Executive Director Michael Governanti in a mysterious walk-on part.
Performances will begin at 8 pm on Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Sorg Opera House, 57 Main Street in Middletown. There is a free educational seminar across the street at the Historical Society by Bob Holmes at 7 pm before both evening's performances.
Dress any way you like...from tuxes to blue jeans. A special student "date night" two-for-one package is being offered for $12.50, $15 or $20. Call (513) 425-0180 for more ticket information.

High School Senior Night Is Feb. 27 High school seniors, where will you be next fall? Miami University Middletown can help you answer that question at High School Senior Night on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
The evening will feature information on majors and careers, student life, the application process and financial aid. There will be a panel featuring current Miami Middletown students sharing information on why they chose to start their education at Miami Middletown, as well as a special session for parents. Refreshments, including pizza, will be served at 5:45 p.m.

Soul Food Luncheon Set For Feb. 20Miami University Middletown will host a Soul Food Luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 20 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the campus Verity Lodge.
Catered this year by Not Just Balloons, the menu includes fried chicken, fried catfish, ham, collard greens, cabbage, green beans, macaroni and cheese, candied sweet potatoes, potato salad, cole slaw, great northern beans, red beans and rice, pound cake, sweet potato pie, peach cobbler, cornbread and biscuits.

Miami Middletown Hosts March 14 Church Leadership Conference Miami University Middletown will conclude its 2003 Church Conference Series with a leadership forum featuring five experts discussing topics vital to the growth and success of todays churches. It will be held from 8:30 a.m. 3 p.m. on Friday, March 14.
Speakers at this conference include:
Pastor Sue Nilson of the Ginghamsburg Church in Tipp City speaking on Ministry by Strengths;
Father Chuck Mentrup of Fenwick High School covering success strategies for project initiatives;
Pastor Jim Cochran of the Vineyard Community Church speaking on church business management;
Dr. Rich Luebbe of Miami University speaking on turning vision into reality;
Pastor Mark Milioni of The Chapel of the Miami Valley will speak on the sensitivity good leadership demands.

Thirty-two First-time Students Honored
(From left) Lindsay Jared, Lauren Zuschlag, Zachary Bohannon, Sarah Baker and Sarah Osborne were among the Miami Middletown first-time students honored recently at an Academic Recognition Banquet in Oxford. Honorees earned a 3.75 grade point average and took at least 12 hours.
Miami Middletown had 32 first-time students who earned a 3.75 or above, taking at least 12 hours, during fall semester 2002 and were invited to attend an Academic Recognition Banquet in Oxford.

Miami Middletown Hosts March 1 Golf ClinicToo cold to go outside? Why not get a jump-start on next season's golf game by attending the 5th Annual Golf Clinic at Miami University Middletown?
PGA Professional Tony Elieff of the N.C.R. Country Club will be at Miami University Middletown on Saturday, March 1 to provide individualized instruction covering putting, chipping and full swing. Sessions will be held at 9 a.m. and 1:30 and 2 p.m., with the 2 p.m. session for juniors 18 years & under.
Each golfer will work in small groups and will receive a total of 2 hours of instruction. Also, each golfer will receive a video of their swing.
The Golf Clinic will be held at the Bennett Recreation Center at Miami University Middletown. The cost is $40 for the 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. sessions and $30 for the junior's session at 2 p.m., with proceeds benefiting the Middletown campus golf team. This clinic has a limited enrollment so don't delay.
