Scholars & Artists Week begins April 8, 2002Faculty and students at Miami University Middletown will be participating in a Scholars and Artists Week Celebration, April 8-12. Posters and artwork will be displayed April 8 through April 12 in Hawk Haven in Johnston Hall. Brief, 10-minute presentations will be given by participating faculty and students on Wednesday, April 10 from 1:30-3:00 p.m. in Hawk Haven.
"Much can be learned from this event in a short period of time, especially at the presentations," said Dr. Cathy Bishop-Clark, associate professor of computer science and chair of the research and grants committee at Miami Middletown.
"This year, our presenters will be covering topics such as deciduous forest restoration, early advertising and American culture, higher education in Russia, Nietzsche studies, beginning drawing color and expression, teaching movement to children, promoting predatory arthropods to increase corn yield, and much more. It's a great way for all of us to learn about the scholarship of students and faculty at Miami Middletown."

Mentoring Theme of Women's Read-In"Women Mentoring Women" will be the theme of a read-in scheduled for Wednesday, April 3 at Miami University Middletown. It will be held from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Johnston Hall Balcony Lounge, with a reception to follow.
Willa R. Smith, enrollment services officer and instructor at Antioch College, is guest speaker for the read-in. It will be moderated by Tracy Harris, coordinator of student success at Miami Middletown.

The Third Man is Free Film on March 29The Third Man will be shown as part of Miami Middletown's Free Film series on Friday, March 29 at 3 p.m. in Levey Hall Room 100.
A post-WWII thriller filmed on location in bombed out Vienna, The Third Man stars Orson Welles, Joseph Cotton and Trevor Howard. A naive but tenacious American writer of cowboy novels tries to solve the murder of his college friend Harry Lime. The characters cynically explore the ethics of making money in the black market. The dialogue is sharply humorous.

Miami Middletown to Hold Campus Visit Program on March 23The public is invited to come to Miami University Middletown on Saturday, March 23 for a Campus Visit Program. The program begins at 9 a.m. and takes place in Johnston Hall.
The program will include sessions on majors at Miami Middletown, undecided students, adult students, transfer students and financial aid and scholarships. A tour of the campus will also be conducted.
"We are an open admission campus," said Miami Middletown Director of Admission Mary Lu Flynn. "Our students can take classes close to home and at times convenient to their schedules. Our tuition is the second lowest for any regional campus in the state. So we encourage everyone in the region who might be interested in continuing their education to stop by on March 23 to see what we have to offer."

Miami Middletown Sponsors Church Business ConferenceMiami University Middletown will sponsor a one-day church business conference entitled Your Church: TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS on Tuesday, April 23 at the Manchester Inn in Middletown, Ohio. The conference will concentrate on the business principles that ministers need to understand to successfully manage their churches.
Miami University has identified experts in the fields of church budgeting, taxes, legal challenges, investment strategies, insurance risks and the cyber-ministry to lead conference sessions. The luncheon speaker will discuss The Pastor as CEO.

Della Piana To Speak at Miami Middletown on March 25Gail Della Piana, Miami University associate professor of architecture and interior design, will be speaking on her travels in Africa on Monday, March 25 at 1:30 p.m. in Room 110 of Johnston Hall at Miami University Middletown.
Since 1994, Professor Della Piana has taken Miami students to Ghana for a service learning experience. Students have conducted their own research and have participated in several design/build projects including a house, a covered walkway leading into the rainforest, playground equipment and a village library. The Ghana program is associated with the Department of Architecture at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi and with the Department of Home Science at the University of Ghana in Accra.
Della Piana was the second recipient of the Jennie Elder Suel Distinguished Woman of Color award in 1995. In 2000, she was one of five professors to receive honorable mention in the Ernest A. Lynton Award for Faculty Professional Service and Academic Outreach, a national award recognizing faculty members who connect their expertise and scholarship to community outreach in sustained and innovative ways.

Miami Middletown Establishes Campus-Community Chest FundMiami University Middletown has established a Campus- Community Chest Fund, designed to enhance the campus already strong volunteer presence in the region.
Limited funds will be available to assist Miami Middletown faculty and staff with projects which support or enhance campus-community relationships. Funding may be requested for supporting a range of ideas and projects but the projects must show a benefit or link to the regional community. Funding will range from $250 - $1,000.
There is a tradition of community service at Miami Middletown, said Sherry Pieratt, director of development. Our students, faculty and staff contribute more than $30,000 per year to community organizations such as the United Way, Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, Hospice, the Heart Walk and many others.This fund will encourage our people to do even more.
The first project to be funded by the Campus-Community Chest will be repairs to a bridge on the Miami Middletown nature trail, used by members of the community-at-large throughout the year.
Also in the works is funding of campus-wide CPR training on the Miami Middletown campus.
Funds for the Campus-Community Chest will come from unrestricted gifts to Miami Middletown. Ninety percent of these gifts, left to the discretion of the campus, go to scholarships.

Miami Middletown to Host Tech Challenge on April 26Miami University Middletown will host Tech Challenge 2002 from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 26 at several campus locations.
The highlight of this years Tech Challenge is a LEGO Mindstorms Robotic Contest, sponsored by Miami Middletowns Engineering Technology Department. Teams from area high schools will build a robot from a LEGO kit provided by Miami Middletown. Entry forms were mailed to area high schools in February.
The LEGO Mindstorms robotics kits, valued at $200 each, have been purchased with funds from the Miami Middletown Campus- Community Chest Fund and will belong to all of the participating schools after the contest. The kits will be distributed to teachers in the robotics contest on March 20.
Other Tech Challenge events include a multimedia contest, web design contest, nursing web challenge, a technology and ethics forum and a chemistry in action presentation by Wild Flavors, Inc. of Erlanger, Ky. a member of Miami Middletowns Chemical Technology Advisors Council.

Middletown Area Miami Alumni to "Wine and Dine" on April 20The Middletown Area Chapter of the Miami University Alumni Association will again host its popular Wine and Dine evening at Valley Vineyards in Morrow, Ohio on Saturday, April 20. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Dinner will include a New York strip steak, fresh salads, baked potato, vegetable, bread, dessert assortment and a bottle of Valley Vineyards wine per couple. Cost for the event is $40.00 per couple or $20.00 per single.

Miami University Middletown Received NAACP Award Miami University Middletown received the Community Service Award of the Middletown Branch of the NAACP at their Annual Scholarship Banquet held last week. The award was presented to Miami Middletown Executive Director Michael P. Governanti by Vivian C. Washington, III, Vice President of the local NAACP chapter.
This award recognizes Miami University Middletown for its involvement in the community and the educational opportunities it provides, said Washington. Middletown is truly blessed to have a school of Miamis reputation in its own back yard.
