    2. Enter your UniqueID and password to view circulation information.
    3. Click on the line "You have X items checked out" to display your borrowed items.
    4. Select the items you would like to renew and click on Renew Selected Items. The new due date will be displayed for each renewed item.

  • How do I find articles on my topic?

We recommend searching Academic Search Complete as your first option for nearly any topic. It has a large enough number of periodicals and a wide enough variety of academic areas covered to accommodate nearly any question. Plus, the majority of the articles in the database are available in full-text.

Beyond Academic Search Complete, Miami University subscribes to a large number of other periodical indexes. You may wish to browse for resources related to the topic by clicking on Research by Subject and then choosing a close subject area.

  • How do I tell if a particular article is available in full-text?

If you are in a periodical index and wonder how to get to the full-text of an article:
    1. In the EBSCO databases (e.g., Academic Search Complete) there will be a link below the citation of each article indicating that either HTML full-text or PDF full-text (or both) are available for each article.
    2. In addition, in nearly all of our databases there will be a “Find It!” link next to each article citation.
    3. If you click this link, a new window will open and display a link to the full-text of the article (if available) and a listing of which (if any) Miami University libraries own the periodical that the article appears in.

If you have an article citation (author, article title, periodical title, dates, page numbers, etc.) and wonder if it is in full-text:
    1. You can try two resources to check on the existence of full-text for a specific citation.
    2. Is my periodical in full-text?” is a link to a database that lists the start dates and periodical databases for full-text periodicals accessible to patrons of Miami and OhioLINK libraries. You search it by the title of the periodical.
    3. You can also do a title search for the periodical in the Miami Catalog to see if a Miami library owns the printed periodical, or if Miami has a separate full-text subscription to the periodical (indicated in the Catalog as “Online” with a link to the periodical's full-text).

In either case, if a desired article is not available in full-text, but is held at a Miami library other than Middletown, you may order the article through interlibrary loan (ILL). The online ILL form is available at http://www.lib.muohio.edu/ill/. These guidelines also apply if the article is in a periodical not held at a Miami library (though the process will likely take longer than with periodicals owned by Miami).

  • How do I find materials that are held at the Gardner-Harvey Library?

    • Specific books, journals, and audiovisual items may be located by doing a title search in the Catalog and then checking for Locations that include Middletown.
    • When searching by Subject, you can limit your results to a particular campus by clicking on Limit/Sort at the top of the screen, and then selecting “Middletown Campus” from the drop down menu following “WHERE Item is Located.”
    • When searching by Words, you can select Middletown from the “WHERE Item is Located” limit under the Advanced Keyword Search box.

  • How do I find (and request) materials that are held at other Miami University libraries?

    • The Catalog searches all of the library collections at Miami by default.
    • If you find “Available” items at other Miami Libraries (i.e., King, Science, Hamilton, Music), you may order the item using the “Request Item” link at the top of the screen.
    • The process is described on the page that appears.
    • You will be notified by email and paper mail when your item arrives. You may also wish to check with the Library Front Desk (513-727-3222) to see if the item is here yet.
    • Items generally take 2-3 business days to arrive.

  • How do I find (and request) materials that are held at OhioLINK libraries?

If you find items in the Catalog that are not “Available”, you may search for them within the OhioLINK Central Catalog. To do this:
    1. Click on the “Statewide Search” link at the top of the screen.
    2. You will see a catalog record very similar to the one in Miami's Catalog, except that it will indicate how many OhioLINK libraries own the item.
    3. You can attempt to request a copy from another library by clicking on “Request This Item.”
    4. You first need to choose Miami from the drop down list of institutions, and then enter your UniqueID and password.
    5. Make sure you choose a pickup location (typically Middletown).

Two rules to remember: (1) you cannot request items from OhioLINK that are “Available” at Miami, and (2) you can only request OhioLINK items that are themselves “Available.” OhioLINK items generally take 3-4 business days to arrive.

  • How do I find (and request) materials that are owned by libraries beyond OhioLINK?

    • If you cannot find a specific book or media item in the Catalog or the OhioLINK Central Catalog, you can check in two other places.
    • First, you can check the Middletown Public Library's collection (instructions below).
    • Second, you can check WorldCat.
    • If you locate the item in WorldCat, and you would like to order the item via interlibrary loan (ILL), use the online request form at http://www.lib.muohio.edu/ill/.
    • Likewise, periodical articles that are not available in the Library's collection or in full-text may be requested using the online request form.
    • Be aware that it could take as long as several weeks for the item to arrive.

  • How do I see if an item is owned by the Middletown Public Library?

    • The search options are similar to those in the Miami University Catalog.
    • The catalog entry will indicate which public library branches hold the item.
    • You will need a Middletown Public Library (MPL) card to checkout items from the library.
    • We are happy to have you fill out a public library card registration form at our library which we will fax over to MPL.

There are a number of useful information sources on Miami University Libraries site that can help you find this information. They are collected in the “Online Reference Shelf” by category. • You may also consult our Catalog for specific titles or contact our library staff for more assistance.

  • How do I set up a journal alert or a search alert?

  • Journal alerts can be set up in many of our databases and our largest full-text journal collection to email you (or send an update to an RSS feed reader) when a new issue of a given periodical is available. Instructions on setting this function up for our various Ebsco databases (e.g., Academic Search Complete, Education Research Complete, SocINDEX) are available here. Journal alerts may can also be created in the Electronic Journal Center (EJC), and instructions for doing so are available on the EJC site. The same linked documents can also help you set up search alerts, which will regularly send you updates when new articles that match predefined search criteria appear in a given database or collection.

  • How do I set up and use a RefWorks account?

RefWorks accounts are available for any interested MU students, faculty, or staff members. Helpful instructions for setting up an account and using the service (along with handouts and a link to the RefWorks site) are available at the RefWorks page on the University Libraries web site.
