Program Details


Leadership Action (5 Hours)

Leaders take action! These activities should enhance leadership skills such as motivation, commitment, creativity, innovation, time management, planning, and goal setting.  

Possible Activities:

  • Being a member of a committee, student organization or special group
  • Tutoring or mentoring others
  • Participate in a leadership conference or seminar


Communication (5 Hours)

Excellent communication skills are listed by employers as one of the most important skills employees need to be successful in their career. Leaders must know how to successfully listen, write and speak. Effective communication allows for problem solving and overcoming differences. 

Possible Activities:

  • Attending a speaker event
  • Writing an article for a newspaper
  • Communicating your beliefs in a significant way


Civic Leadership (5 Hours)

One of Miami University Middletown’s main focuses is strengthening the community.  As students participate in service activities, they will learn to share this vision. Additionally, students will gain a sense of responsibility by making a commitment.  

Possible Activities:

  • Volunteer for an organization such as Hope House, the Humane Society, Abilities First, MRDD, etc.
  • Participating in the Relay for Life
  • Fundraising


Diversity (5 Hours)

As globalization persists, we must learn to have mutual respect for those whose experiences, beliefs, and perspectives are different from our own. Each event should address a different aspect of diversity.  

Possible Activities:

  • Researching diverse groups of people such as various religious groups, ethnic groups, sexual oriented groups, animal rights groups, vegetarian/vegan groups
  • Attend a speaker of diverse content
  • Involvement with a diverse group on campus


Team Learning (5 hours)

Increasingly, all career fields require people to work successfully in teams. Learning in teams is an opportunity to enhance your abilities in preparation for careers in leading modern organizations. Students will be put in diverse groups to complete a team project.

Possible Activities:

  • Group Presentations or projects on a mutually agreed upon topic
  • Providing services for others
  • Fundraising for a charity


Mentorship

You will be matched up with a mentor from the community that has professional experience in the “real world.” Mentors and students will be matched based on similar career interest and goals. You will have the opportunity to meet with your mentor several times over the year. You are required to job shadow them at least once.


Additional Requirements

  • One meeting per semester with the program coordinator.
  • Attend 2 speakers/workshops per semester
  • Attend 2 meetings with the whole group per semester
  • Attend recognition banquet at the end of the year


Applying for the program

This program will be open to all students regardless of their major, class standing or GPA. Students should complete the following.

  • Submit an application
  • One page essay
  • One letter of recommendation

Please turn in application, essay, letter of recommendation letter and mentor application to Kelly Trueman in room 9 Johnston Hall, by September 15th at 5 pm .
