Privacy Policy

PadlockFor your protection, the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) limits release of information about your records without your explicit consent.

FERPA gives you the right to inspect and review your financial aid records. It also gives your parents the right to review those records if your parents claim you as a dependent on their federal income tax return.

If you wish your parents to access your financial aid records, do one of the following:

  • Have your parents certify that you are dependent according to Section 152 of the Internal Revenue Code.
Or
  • Authorize us to release information about your financial aid records to persons you designate.

When you call the Office of Student Financial Assistance, you will be asked for two of the following three personal identifiers before we can discuss your records.

  • Student's birth date,
  • Student's Social Security number
  • Student's Banner plus (+) number.

Anyone who calls on your behalf will also be asked to provide these identifiers, so be sure to share this information only with the person(s) you list on the release form. When you visit our office, you will be asked to provide a photo ID to confirm your identity before we can discuss your financial aid records with you.

If a student wants to authorize any administrative offices at Miami University, including the Office of Student Financial Assistance, to give information to other people (including parents), the student must grant access under "Sharing Access to Your Personal Records" on myMiami's student tab. Remember to specify the person(s) who are allowed to review student information. Granting access to a student's personal records also allows these person(s) access to myMiami for Families. The access will be valid for a student's entire length of study unless modified by the student.

Granting Access to a Student's Personal Records

1. Login into myMiami with your unique ID and password.

2. Select the "Student" tab at the top of myMiami.

3. Within the "Student" tab, locate the section "Sharing Access to your Personal Records".

4. Click on "Add additional people and/or modify access" to authorize users to access your personal records.

5. Choose "Add additional people."

6. Enter an email address for the person you are giving access to and click the Submit button.

7. Enter the person's information and indicate what records should be shared with this person.
