The Center for Teaching and Learning began operation in 2004 thanks to the
efforts of an ad hoc committee of faculty and staff, and its mission from
the start has been to promote and enhance student achievement and champion
quality teaching at Miami University-Middletown. The role of the CTL is to
foster a sense of collaboration among all campus educators — full- and
part-time faculty, staff, and administrators — and all students as a
means of fulfilling that mission. The CTL is founded on the principle that
the diverse student body and committed faculty are Miami Middletown's greatest
resources; by working together and learning from one another, faculty and
students can create an inclusive community which encourages all learners to
reach their full potential. The CTL is committed as well to serving as an
advocate for the teaching mission of the regional campus and its faculty within
the university, academe, and the community at large.
Fulfilling the mission
In order to fulfill its mission, the CTL is dedicated to promoting
innovation, providing services, and fostering a scholarly approach to teaching.
Understanding that the processes of learning and teaching are complex and
evolving and that definitive answers do not usually exist, the CTL promises
to help faculty and students explore possible answers to important questions
such as:
-
How can faculty incorporate the goals of the Miami Plan into their teaching?
-
How can teaching and learning at Miami Middletown connect with the surrounding
community in ways that might transform both the campus and the community?
-
How can faculty use reflective practice to improve student learning?
-
How can the scholarship of teaching and learning provide insights that
might enhance learning and teaching at the Middletown campus?
-
What are some of the ways to make teaching and learning more inclusive
at the Middletown campus?
-
How can faculty better collaborate and learn from one another in order
to teach more effectively?
-
What are effective ways to teach that will help students become more
responsible citizens?
-
How can students contribute to their learning and to the learning of
faculty?
-
How can the CTL respond to emerging needs of the campus?
Because new questions and answers about teaching and learning continually arise,
this mission statement is intended to be a starting place only. As the CTL
grows, its mission statement--and the questions the CTL raises--will need
to grow with it.
