Center for Teaching and Learning
Funding Guidelines
The MUM Center for Teaching and Learning is committed to dedicating no less than half its annual budget in direct support of faculty-initiated efforts on behalf of improved teaching and learning. Two types of funding are available, for reading/media groups and for teaching initiatives. Funds must be used by May 31 of the fiscal year during which the funding is approved. The requirements for both types of funding are described below. For any questions about funding, please contact the CTL LC at mumctl@muohio.edu.
To request funding through the CTL, interested individuals or groups must electronically submit a one-page request form to MUMCTL@muohio.edu. The Leadership Collaborative (LC) will call for applications each semester but will accept applications at any time. Applicants should be aware that we may not always have funding available. Although individuals or groups receiving funding in any academic year may apply for further funding in that year, every effort will be made to disperse the funds to as large a field as possible.
Types of funding:
1. Funds for Reading/Media Groups (4 or more faculty/staff/students)
A reading/media group will meet to discuss a chosen book, film, or other medium. Groups may meet to improve their collective understanding of an issue or with the hopes of eventually initiating a later project. Funds must be used by May 31 of the fiscal year during which the funding is approved.
$200 maximum per group
Requirements:
- Identify a group leader, who must be either a faculty or staff member on the Miami University Middletown campus, and other group members.
- Identify the media object.
- Describe the project, including information on:
- how the media discussion applies to the Mission Statement of the CTL.
- the goals of the discussion and how their achievement will be assessed.
- how the discussion will impact teaching and learning at MUM.
- how the results of the group activity might be shared with the MUM community.
- Detail expenditures for the group.
- Send a post-project report to the LC and share your project with the MUM campus through an article about your project to be published in the CTL Notes (details below).
- Acceptable expenditures include purchasing texts or media object(s) and refreshments.
2. Funds for Teaching Initiatives or Projects
These initiatives might involve research and development of specific teaching projects, certain pedagogical strategies, or particular classroom issues. They might involve individual faculty or “working groups” who wish to learn about and implement new teaching ideas. The specific activities and approach undertaken for each initiative may vary widely. Funds must be used by May 31 of the fiscal year during which the funding is approved.
$500 maximum per project
Requirements:
- Identify a project leader, who must be either a faculty or staff member on the Miami University Middletown campus, and other group members (if group project).
- Describe the project, including information on:
- how the project applies to the Mission Statement of the CTL.
- the goals of the project and how their achievement will be assessed.
- how the project will impact teaching and learning at MUM.
- how the results of the project might be shared with the MUM community.
- Detail expenditures for the entire project, showing what portion the CTL will be funding.
- Send a post-project report to the LC and share your project with the MUM campus through an article about your project to be published in the CTL Notes (details below).
Acceptable expenditures include travel, honoraria for speakers, books, subscriptions, software, copying, postage, supplies, and food for retreats. Ineligible expenditures include compensation for time spent. Equipment, in general, will not be an eligible expenditure.
The CTL Leadership Collaborative will make all decisions involving funding. If an LC member is an applicant or part of a group applying, that member will be excused from that funding decision.
Reporting Guidelines
At the conclusion of the project or activity, the funded individual/group must share its results through both:
1) Writing a funding report, electronically filing a written report to the CTL detailing the project outcomes. This report will be linked to the CTL Web page on which funded projects are listed. The following points should be addressed:
- the goals of the project
- the activities you and/or the group members engaged in (e.g., how often you met and what you did during the meetings)
- formal and informal evidence that your project goals were met
- how your project impacts teaching and learning at Miami Middletown
- how funds were expended
Your report should not exceed two pages. The report is due by the end of the semester in which the funded project was completed, which will generally fall within the academic year during which the funds were received.
and
2) Writing a short article (1 -2 paragraphs) on their project and its impact on teaching and learning at MUM to be published in the CTL Notes.
Email reports and other communications to the Center for Teaching and Learning at mumctl@muohio.edu.
Those funded are also encouraged to share their project with the Middletown campus in other ways. This sharing may take the form of, for example, a poster or poster session at the CTL or an oral presentation to the campus. Recipients of funding are encouraged to consult the CTL LC to discuss ways to share projects, and the CTL will help coordinate and publicize such activities to the extent its resources and priorities will allow.
