Network Storage and Drive Mappings
Technology Services maintains network space for users to store and access data. These network drive mappings may be found by opening the "My Computer" icon on your desktop or by clicking the “Start” button and selecting “My Computer”. Not all users will have access to all drives.
Below, you will find information on the function and proper usage of the various drive mappings available.
G: Drive – Shared Folders (Departmental) This is no longer being mapped.
Alternate path is R:\MID\Shared or Z:\MUFiles\MID\Shared or Z:\MUFiles\Regional\MID\Shared.
The G: drive is used to share data within a department for collaborative purposes. Access is limited to members of the department. A written request from the departmental supervisor is required for access. Caution must be exercised when using the G: drive especially when editing or deleting files. Data is backed up daily. Periodic deletion and archival of old information should be dealt with appropriately.
This data will soon be migrated to R:\Shared.
H: Drive - User File Storage (Faculty/Staff)
Alternate path is R:\MID\Users or Z:\MUFiles\MID\Users or Z:\MUFiles\Regional\MID\Users.
The H: drive, also known as home directory, is for individual faculty/staff who have outgrown centrally provided universal disk space (M:). Access is limited to each user. Files are backed up nightly, but open files cannot be backed up. Please close all files and log out at night to ensure the integrity of your data. ***Accounts are no longer automatically created and must be requested in writing starting January 1, 2011.
This data will soon be migrated to R:\Users.
K: Drive - Application Software
The K: drive is used to run applications from the network. It is also used by Technology Services staff to deploy software to users.
M: Drive - Universal Disk Space (Students/Faculty/Staff)
Alternate path is Z:\MyFiles.
The M: drive, located on the university's central servers, provides limited disk space (1GB) for all Miami University faculty, staff, and students. Your Universal Disk Space (UDS) can be used to publish web pages on the internet.
R: Drive - Regional Space
Alternate path is Z:\MUFiles\Regional.
The R: drive is new regionally provided space stored on both Hamilton and Middletown servers (mirrored).
- R:\Shared is used to share data regionally within departments for collaborative purposes. Access is limited to members of the department. A written request from the departmental supervisor is required for access. Caution must be exercised when using the R: drive especially when editing or deleting files. Data is backed up daily. Periodic deletion and archival of old information should be dealt with appropriately.
- R:\Users is currently empty. The goal is to migrate home directories from Hamilton and Middletown here.
- R:\HAM is a convienient shortcut to Hamilton specific folders.
- R:\MID is a convienient shortcut to Middletown specific folders.
S: Drive - Public Storage (Academic Classes)
Alternate path is Z:\MUFiles\Classes.
Faculty who wish to share information with students beyond the limits of BlackBoard can create a class folder under the appropriate three letter department code. Students have file permissions to view and execute files but cannot modify or delete. This is NOT PERMANENT STORAGE. All files will be deleted at the end of fall and spring semesters. Instructors are responsible for maintaining offline copies.
Z: Drive - DFS Root
Technically it points to the root of DFS space. If you have some file space on a departmental server in Oxford, like CASSERVER1 or ADMSERVER2, and that space has been migrated to DFS you can find it on Z:.
