The mission of the Teen Mentoring Committee is to contribute to the development of youth for productive citizenship. Our goals are to provide an on-going support structure and process that augments those provided by parents, schools and communities, and to provide youth with relevant and diverse learning opportunities, insight for life-long success, and life skills that will positively impact their lives.
The Teen Mentoring Committee is a 501 c3 organization founded in December 2004 by nine men who were concerned about the goals and aspirations of young men in grades 7th-12th. The group has now grown to thirteen men who are committed to helping young African American boys, in particular achieve their goals. While the focus of our work is with African American boys, we have not turned away any male youth who seeks our assistance. Some of our recent activities include the following:
>> Gave away free dictionaries and bicycles to students as a part
of the Middletown City back to school event held in September,2007
>> Had a breakfast event held at Rosa Parks Elementary School co-sponsored by
Waffle House
>> Presented a $2,100.00 check to the Middletown City School System to assist
the schools in continuing student activities
>> Sponsored Dr. Odell Owens, Hamilton County Coroner in a workshop given at
Middletown High School for students during February, 2008
>> Sponsored a bus trip for 40 young boys to attend a University of Cincinnati
athletic event
>> Will sponsor the 4th Annual Male Youth Summit in June, 2008
>> Received a Community Response Grant from the Middletown Area United Way
>> Will be working on a state-wide initiative from the Governor’s
office to increase the number of African American males that graduate from high
school
