Summer Arts Workshop
June 16 - August 15
Information: Sue Rogers 422-4435 | souixp2@earthlink.net

The Art Central Foundation (ACF) is pleased to announce the launch of our Summer Art Workshops (SAW) for area youth, which began this week on June 16th. There are eight different classes, each focusing on eight different visual art media: watercolor, acrylic, clay, drawing, paper, fiber, sculpture & photography. Each class will last a week in length (with the exception of clay, which will run for two) and has a morning session for younger students and an afternoon session for older students. The students were nominated by their school art teacher this spring and went through a selection process to be placed in a class. At the end of the summer, there will be an exhibit of the work produced by the students.

The teachers will include several projects for the children, highlighting different aspects of the media, as well as some history of that media. Some classes will include guest artists or possible field trips. The instructors are, for the most part, art teachers in Middletown public or private schools. The exception is Sarah Roof, a fine art student at Miami University, and a graduate of Middletown High School. She has extensive experience in working with area youth through Young Life and other youth camps. The classes that reach, or come close to capacity, will also have student aides to assist the instructors. These are young volunteers from the region who are interested in the arts.

This is the Art Central Foundation’s second venture into youth workshops, the first being last summer’s Pottery Workshop, funded by a grant from the Dave & Carole Schul Fund. This year, the ACF received a grant from the Middletown Community Foundation for partial funding of these workshops, with additional monies coming from Duke Energy. Miami Middletown Downtown is donating the use of a room in their facility at 4 N Main St. There is no cost for the workshop. We at the Art Central Foundation are very excited to offer this opportunity to these young artists and hope that this will be a successful continuation of mentoring experiences for area youth in the arts.
