Co-op/Internship & Placement Criteria and Procedures

GET SOME EXPERIENCE!

Once you have identified a major and career interest area, it is important to gain some experience in the field! This will help you affirm your career interest and give you valuable experience and professional contacts in the field. We encourage students to have an internship or co-op experience and to consider career interests when accepting a part-time job. Signing up is easy, all you need is 12 credit hours, with at least six hours in the technical skill area in which you are seeking a co-op/internship and a 2.2 GPA!

7. Visit our Career Resource Center

  • There are numerous books, periodicals and reference materials available for you to find career specific information on your program of study.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

Students are strongly encouraged to pursue an internship or co-op position that provides practical experience related to their major; they are optional in most majors.

Students interested in credit for their internship/co-op:

  • Credit is available for co-op in Engineering Technology, Chemical Technology, and Computer Information Technology. (see Career Services staff or department chairs).
  • Credit may be available through independent study credit in most majors; students must make arrangements with a faculty member who is willing to serve as the instructor.

SERVICE LEARNING

Service learning allows you to volunteer in the community to help meet an identified need and to link the experience with a class that relates to the volunteer activity. It is possible to use the +1 Credit Option that connects service with a Miami Plan foundation course and receive an additional credit hour. You make the arrangements with your faculty member using the Service Learning forms (http://www.units.muohio.edu/saf/service/forms.htm). For additional information, go to www.muohio.edu/servicelearning or speak to the staff in JH1. For information on local volunteer opportunities, go to www.mid.muohio.edu (Volunteer Positions in pull-down menu).

GRADUATING STUDENTS

As you prepare to graduate, the Career Services office will assist you with the job search process. The assistance available includes: resume and cover letter review, mock interviews, job search strategies, career counseling and job postings. Students may want to take the Professional Development course (BTE/CIT/ENT 221, two credit hours, letter grade) sometime during their final two semesters.

Students completing a baccalaureate degree should complete the Oxford Career Planning and Placement online registration process to be included in their database and participate in on-campus interviews. Employers search the database for candidates who meet their criteria for job openings; students must be in the database for employers to have access to their information. The online registration is completed at www.units.muohio.edu/careers; use the Services for Students button to get started.
