Alternative Ways to Earn College Credit
Acceptance of nontraditional credit, such as credit by examination, extension credit, correspondence credit, and armed forces credit, is limited to 32 semester hours. Only 20 of the 32 hours may be in correspondence work and in extension work from other institutions. (Miami Bulletin page 18)
Testing Out or Portfolio Assessment for Credit
Individual departments may offer the opportunity to either test out of a course for which you can demonstrate competency (most often in a technical or computer related area). Proficiency exams are administered by the individual department (may be only on the Oxford campus) and to be approved to take an
exam you must satisfy the department that you have a reasonable chance of passing the exam. Credit earned is traditional credit and is not counted in the 32 hours of nontraditional credit admissible. No grades are awarded for proficiency examiniations. There is a fee to receive credit. (Miami Bulletin pg. 51)

CLEP - College Level Examination Program
CLEP is a nationally standardized credit by examination program sponsored by the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) and consists of two types of tests, General and Subject Examinations. Miami University does not accept CLEP credit in the Liberal Arts General examinations.
Miami will grant undergraduate credit for passing the Subject Examiniations in French, Spanish, Chemistry, Calculus, American Government, Introductory Psychology and Introductory Sociology. Credit will not be given if proficiency has already been demonstrated by taking a higher level course. Failure to achieve a passing score shall not be recorded on the student's record.
Students:
- Should have prior knowledge of or experience in the subject matter area.
- Must get prior approval from the appropriate academic department.
- Who pass a CLEP Subject Examination will be granted credit hours for the appropriate course(s) but will not be given a letter grade for the course)s).
- Must list Miami University as a Score Report Recipient when the student registers for the examination. (Miami's Code is 1463)
- May retake a CLEP Subject Examination after waiting a minimum of six months.
Test dates can be arranged through the Counseling Services but students must pre-register for exams. If examinations are taken at another university students must still meet the minimum score requirements established by the Miami department. For more information on using CLEP to earn credit contact the Student Counseling Services in Room 1 Johnston Hall or call 513-727-3431.
