Bookstore ordering process:

Orders are processed as they are submitted. Below is a BRIEF summary of the entire process. (This list only touches the surface of activities!)

      • Orders submitted to Bookstore
      • Author, Title, ISBN, Edition, Publisher, Availability verified
      • Entered into our Inventory Management System

      Order decisions made based on:

      1. Past Enrollments
      2. Current estimated enrollments
      3. Sell through is the number of books SOLD based on the number of books purchased AND actual enrollment. This lets us see if instructors are actually utilizing the required books for class OR whether students simply are not buying the books! This is an important tracking tool for us and influences future buying patterns!
      4. In-store student buyback is performed. We buy books from students BASED on orders received from YOU! We DO NOT ASSUME that you are using the same textbooks as before. You must place an order EACH semester and have it to us by the above dates so that students receive the highest possible price for their books!
      5. Want lists are generated and sent to textbook wholesalers to fulfill quantities not purchased from students.
      6. Purchase orders are built and processed for all titles not filled by the textbook wholesalers.
      7. USED books are received, cleaned, stickered and shelved.
      8. New books and course packets are “received” into our inventory system with new ISBN’s adopted and prices updated.
      9. Sales occur
      10. Inventory is performed to verify quantities still on-hand
      11. Returns are generated by our system based on quantity ordered less quantity sold
      12. Books NOT ordered for the next semester are returned

      • As orders for subsequent semester come in this entire process begins anew!
      • This is simply the basics. There is a GREAT DEAL of time, effort and labor that goes into each of these processes. By working together, getting orders in early, buying books back from our students, increasing sell through and cutting down on “over ordering” we can help keep the cost of higher education (at least the cost of books) DOWN on our campus!

      Text Orders:

We at the Miami University Bookstores are well aware of how expensive textbooks have become, and with so many of our students on limited budgets, helping to control those costs has become one of our highest priority goals. The most effective means at our disposal of reducing costs is to offer as many used books as possible. For the past several years we have conducted an aggressive campaign to secure used books from a variety of sources, but we’re in competition with every other college bookstore in the country for the same small supply, so the earlier we can start searching the better our results will be. The sooner we have your book orders for the upcoming terms the sooner we can start looking for used copies of those books.

We are eager to work with faculty to incorporate rental titles and eBooks into your course requests if desired. Please contact Daphne with any questions and/or concerns you may have regarding your classroom materials.

Book order forms are available at the bookstore or in the faculty secretary’s office. You may bring your list to the bookstore any time during normal business hours, send it via campus mail, or e-mail it to eldriddl@muohio.edu. You may also fax us at 727-3435.

Please keep the following information in mind when placing your orders:

      • Your order should include semester, department, course number, section letters and estimated enrollment. Be sure to include the author, title, edition, publisher and ISBN for each book you are ordering, as well as any special information that would help insure we get the correct version. If the book comes with a computer disk please let us know whether you will require the disk. This can often affect the availability of used copies. Also, please indicate whether the book is required or optional. Any additional materials or supplies you will require may also be included on your list. And don’t forget to include your name, phone number and e-mail address so we can contact you if we need additional information about your order.
If you plan to prepare a syllabus, class notes, lab manual, or reading packet and would like to have the bookstore distribute it, please note this on your text list. For assistance in planning and producing such materials, please call the Miami University Copy Center at 529-6065.

Finally, remember that if you are teaching on more than one campus you must submit a separate text list to the bookstore on each campus.
